2. In the stone age: emerge • Chrome OS was based on Gentoo, the Linux distribution. • emerge command ◦ Install applications by building from source ◦ Time consuming ◦ ARM devices are not capable of compiling large programs
3. Current method: Crouton • Install Linux distributions on Chrome OS via chroot. • The most popular method currently. • Crouton separates processes only form file systems.

In the near future: Crostini • Linux container project for Chrome OS • Runs Linux applications such as GIMP in containers • VM (Termina) -> Containers (where applications run) • Several daemons run on Chrome OS, VM, and containers. ◦ Device input / output are communicated through them to Wayland servers on the OS. • Caution ◦ Only certain devices are supported so far. ◦ No 32-bit ARM support because of no VM hardware.
6. Summary • Linux apps are going to be available on Chrome OS • No hack anymore!
