Rant: Lifecycle Mgmt is not Optional
Oblig meme
Why am I ranty? Important systems running on unmaintained and
unmaintainable technology stacks
Lifecycle mgmt? “...the process of managing the entire lifecycle of
a product from inception, through engineering design and manufacture, to service and disposal of manufactured products.” --wikipedia
How it starts • A new stack is near free
to install • Usually solves a short term problem • Insourced system, outsourced code • Don’t understand the stack
How it ends • Mostly in late night pages and
tears • Overloaded use cases • Deep dependencies in your system • Forced upgrades
Consider the FULL cost If you build it, someone will
use it. If they use it, you have to maintain it. If you have to maintain it, you have to budget people, hardware, and time.
Coming soon... Rant: don’t deprecate, expunge.
