Making Learning Visible with Student-Generated Video Content

Having students create videos of themselves working out solutions to problems was used as a replacement or supplement to written homework solutions in Calculus 1 and Calculus 2 courses -- and the results were impressive. These are slides from a talk given by Robert Talbert and Shelly Smith at the AMS/MAA Joint Meetings in January 2017. A companion website, with links to materials, is at http://bit.ly/jmmvideo.

  1. Making Learning Visible with Student-Generated Video Content Shelly Smith and

Robert Talbert Grand Valley State University AMS/MAA Joint Meetings 2017 MAA Session on Creation and Implementation of Effective Homework Assignments
  2. What’s this about? We had students create video content for

our courses to replace or supplement written homework solutions. They were able to demonstrate their thinking and put their own personalities into it and help their classmates. Students showed significantly more progress on self-regulated learning skills and behaviors on their video solutions than we’ve seen from written homework solutions. http://bit.ly/jmmvideo
