  1. 1 The Barrel Collection | Fuming Guerrila Productions THE BARREL

COLLECTION Presented by Fuming Guerilla Productions
  2. I would like to introduce you to our exclusive Barrel

Collection. These limited-edition white oak barrel pieces have been uniquely created by a curated group of up-and-coming and well-known artists, primarily residing in the Bay Area. This latest inspiration transpired from our love of wine & art and wanting to pair the two as closely as possible. Winemaking in itself is an art as much as it is a science, and wine lovers typically have a true appreciation for artistry in many forms. What better way to honor the art of wine making than to turn the barrels that housed wonderful elixirs into beautiful paintings. These are the ideal pieces to complement a tasting room or gallery, and can be used as public art displays. Fuming Guerilla Productions’ mission is to work with talented artists as a producer, marketer and broker. Many of the artists we collaborate with are on the verge of becoming very well-known, and we are excited to have a hand in taking them to the next level in their careers. We have produced some of the biggest and most beautiful murals in Oakland, CA with a focus on large interior and exterior walls as our core production. However, we have recently branched out to produce other interesting works, such as The Barrel Collection, and will continue to explore different collaborative projects with our growing number of more than two dozen participating artists. I moved to the Bay Area in 2012 from Southern California. The move brought about a tremendous change in my ability to collaborate much more closely with artists from all of the Bay Area’s nine counties, especially focusing on art strongholds like Oakland—an increasingly hyperactive artistic community. Previously the owner of a marketing firm, along with my wife and business partner, I spent years helping corporate partners achieve recognition and success. What we really wanted to do was help individuals realize their aspirations. The solution my wife and I decided upon was to combine our business expertise with our passion for art. Thus, Fuming Guerilla Productions (FGP) was created. FGP is part broker, part matchmaker and part advisor for clients and artists alike. As a facilitator between the artists and clients, I am authorized to offer you on behalf of our selected artists a unique and wonderful opportunity to obtain our limited-edition wine barrel collection. There will be a total of 44 barrels produced from 7 different artists. Please contact me with any questions you may have by phone 714-822-8470 or email [email protected]. I am as much your resource as the artist’s resource. On behalf of all the contributing artists and Fuming Guerilla Productions, we present The Barrel Collection. THE FORBIDDEN FRUIT “My approach was to keep the integrity of the wine barrel by incorporating the oak and steel bands into the art. I also depicted subject matter I felt was parallel to the wine barrels use of containing a beverage with dual effects on emotions, wine both is imbibed during happiness and sorrow alike.” Hyde One Hyde One is a home grown Bay Area artist. His works are largely inspired by indigenous tribal cultural imagery. He uses various symbols and myths from the Mayan culture to form his visions into paintings. Key features of his work derive from the concept of Duality. Duality, as the word implies, means two states, two poles, both of which arise from a division of unity.

GRAPES OF WRATH “Creating on this surface was challenging as you can’t see the entirety of the images you are painting. The curvature of the barrel lends to a new approach when painting. I had no plan when starting, I wanted to use my current emotions and have no internal dialog going as I set out my paints. My subconscious led me to paint a giant human skull. I realized I was recalling Steinbeck’s book the ‘Grapes of Wrath’ and it had me pondering birth, death and the continuous cycle. After further contemplation I realized I could still smell the sweetness of the wine that had been in the barrel and wondered how this might have influenced the theme. The rainbow represents a new day after disaster – which I added days after the Napa earthquake hit. The rose represents beauty gained from hardship (thorns).” Ernest Doty Ernest Doty was raised in New Mexico but found his success when relocating to Oakland, Ca. Early hardships in his life led to Doty stopping his art altogether from the age of 17 to 24. When a renewed sense of purpose came over him, at the age of 25, he quit his day job and from that day forward became a full-time artist. The support of his friends and family helped him become what he is today; one of the hottest muralists in the country with requests for commissioned work coming in almost weekly. Prolific and passionate, Doty equates justice and vision in his pursuit for more wall space.

OPPOSING ELEMENTS “My inspiration for this barrel was an imaginary sea with a radiant planet in the sky shining down on the waves. I wanted to utilize the shape and natural texture of the barrel while adding movement and expressive colors. I stained part of the natural wood of the barrel to create more of a dramatic affect and to allow the bright colors to have more contrast. I used stenciled clouds to add texture and help balance the overall composition. On the top sits an abstract shape with a pattern and bright colors. The same bright colors are used for shapes and patterns that wrap around the barrel down to the bright blue waves on the bottom that provide movement to the whole piece.” Santos Shelton Santos Shelton is an Artist, Designer, and Muralist based in Oakland, CA. He is a self-taught artist with a degree in design and has been exhibiting works since 2003. He uses bold colors, shapes and textures along with a multitude of mediums to create overlapping abstract elements that convey emotion while expressing movement. Influenced by concepts of space, time, sci-fi and ancient civilizations, Shelton gives us a glimpse into his mind and imagination through a universe he has created. With every changing narrative Shelton seeks to capture the stories of the galaxies, planets, and life forms that live in this universe to express his innermost feelings and perspective on the human experience.

INTERNAL LANDSCAPES “This piece is an exploration of layered, geometric forms representing the peaks and valleys of our psyche, formed by our collective experiences of love, loss, fear, hatred, and joy. The contrasting shapes are a meditation on human conflict and compromise, given depth by the interplay of warm and cool colors amongst masses of gray clouds. These flowing, abstract forms serve as a memory map of emotions and experiences, connecting facets of our existence with irrevocable patterns of destruction and rebirth, much like the composition flows around the surface of the barrel and wraps into itself.” David Polka David Polka is a visual artist and graphic designer currently based in Oakland, CA. Originally from Las Cruces, New Mexico, he is a graduate of the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque and has been exhibiting work professionally since 2006. Drawing inspiration from abandoned places and stories, Polka’s work distills the ephemeral nature of human experience into a visual record of accumulated memories and emotions

CONTINUITIES “The Barrel Project has been a unique and interesting challenge for me. As an artist who bases much of his work around mathematic algorithms, generally in a two dimensional plane, the shape of the barrel has pushed me in new directions. This is the first continuous piece that I have ever made, since it has no vertical edges. Composition must reinvent itself with each slight rotation. Also, on a curved barrel, the geometric elements that I have come so accustomed to using move into the world of non-euclidian geometry, where the angles are no longer what you expect them to be. These new challenges have made way for unique solutions and have given rise to a one of a kind piece of artwork.” Brett Flanigan Brett Flanigan is a self-taught artist who currently lives and works in Oakland, CA. His science background and an interest in folklore and natural order/disorder often guide the direction of his work, which tends to manifest itself in the form of gouache paintings, 35mm photographs or large scale aerosol murals. Brett has spent much of the past few years traveling within the US and abroad, gaining perspective and influence from the people he has met along the way.

ESKER AZUL “When approaching the Barrel Project, I sought to create something that would flow naturally across the circular surface, and speak to the complex yet subtle substance that was stored within during its previous life. Due to the constantly curving canvas, I felt that heavily detailed representational paintings, which usually sit so nicely on large, 2 dimensional canvases, would be difficult for the viewer to fully appreciate. Since there would always be two sides of the imagery that would be disappearing around the back of the barrel, I decided to use my own stylized calligraphy instead. This calligraphy is a continually reoccurring thematic element in my work. Already abstracted through stylization, my calligraphy seemed to be the perfect element to bring the surface of the barrel to life. By combining my calligraphic hand with the romanticism of the handcrafted barrel surface, I was able to design my calligraphic strokes in a manner that constantly moved across the surface of the barrel, keeping the viewer engaged and avoiding a static image. This subtle balance between the complex calligraphic marks and the pre-existing surface matched the way the complexity of wine is tempered by the barrel in which it is aged, creating an object was both visually and conceptually in sync.” Evan ESK Wilson ESK is a calligrapher, muralist and tattoo artist based in Oakland, California. His works balance graffiti and abstract expressionism, with his own personal style of calligraphy being the bridge that separates the two disparate modes of work. This style is made up of English letters but are abstracted through ancient calligraphic strokes inspired from Arabic, Khmer, Thai and Japanese Zen Brushwork. Combining these traditions with more graffiti based elements, ESK’s work guides the viewer to a looser, meditative interpretation of written communication.
