complexity and cruelty of the themes it addresses. The atrocities we see in Merad and the actions of our characters would be very difficult to digest, making it hard to empathize with them afterward. That’s why we believe that with animated characters, we can push these difficulties and atrocities to the limit and still get the audience to care about them, love them, and, most importantly, listen to them. World-building is also a fundamental part of Out of Border. Merad is characterized by the contrast between the old and the new, a small city where we quickly move from poverty to wealth. We also see how the population has improved their homes, transportation, and even clothing with whatever they can obtain. This blend has been successfully represented in animation and video games for years. To conclude, I believe animation stories are easier to connect with. With their unreal worlds, but also, with more realistic animation, I feel there's no need for flying cars and fantastical creatures for it to be animated. It's all about the love and passion for it. As Miyazaki once said: “If you animate the ordinary, it will be extraordinary”.
