  1. Learn through writing: Starting in Tutorial #1. § “Biology Journal” §

Science is based on observation of natural phenomena, and as such scientists need to be observant about the world around them. § From observation and description come questions then hypotheses and experiments § There is a long and distinguished history of scientists making detailed notes of their surroundings….
  2. Meriwether Lewis’s journal notes from 1806 of the Eulachon fish

(Thaleichthys pacificus) Da Vinci’s anatomy drawings from 1511 Jane Goodall’s entry in a 1961 field notebook
  3. ..now it’s your turn J §  The BI111 Biology Journal

is a bi-weekly exercise designed to encourage you to observe and describe the world around you using words and images. §  In each of the next 5 tutorials you will submit 5 journal entries in a notebook
  4. Biology Journal You will need a ~32 page notebook (available

at the bookstore for ~59¢) You will need to cut your notebook in half (only 1 volume will be handed in each tutorial session, and returned to you in the following session) Record your tutorial section number, your name and student number on each half (volume)
  5. Biology Journal Entries (5 every 2 weeks) Each entry consists

of one half-page of text describing something in the biotic world (i.e. life), and an annotated (i.e. labelled) image of the subject of your observations. Text must be in full sentences – not point form! Record the date of your entry at the top of one of the pages.
  6. ..but it’s winter! There’s not much life out there for

me to observe. If you can’t think of / find anything living you can use the internet to view livecams of nature/living creatures. Here are some great sites: http://explore.org/ https://nationalzoo.si.edu/webcams http://www.elephantseal.org/view.htm http://kids.sandiegozoo.org/videos http://www.africam.com/wildlife/ http://www.montereybayaquarium.org/animals-and-experiences/live-web- cams http://www.torontozoo.com/pandacam/ https://www.houstonzoo.org/meet-the-animals/animal-webcams/ https://www.goatslive.com http://www.vanaqua.org/learn/see-and-learn/live-cams Please note: Documentaries / edited clips of nature are NOT acceptable – the goal is to observe nature (even if it banal) rather than a “highlight reel”
  7. …but I can’t draw L You are not being judged

on your artwork – try your best.
  8. …but I really can’t draw LL If this *really* stresses

you out, you can include a screencap or a photo of what you are describing. Remember that the images must be annotated (ie contain descriptive text)
  9. Biology Journal Entries (5 every 2 weeks) Tutorial 1 (today!)
