  1. Taking BIM to The Next Level: The Next Phase of

Visualization with Digital Twins MODULAR CONSTRUCTION LA 2021 TADEH HAKOPIAN
  2. • Tadeh Hakopian • (Todd-A) (Ha-co-pea-on) • Design Technologist and

Developer with HMC Architects in Los Angeles, California • Background in Architecture • Experience in Architecture, Engineering and Construction disciplines with BIM and VDC workflows • Course Author and Speaker for BIM, Dynamo and Coding content ABOUT ME
  3. • HMC digital Practice is an internal group of innovators

and subject matter experts for digital technology • Our mission is to support teams at our company to optimize their projects • Main focus – Process Automation, Data Analytics, Integrated Workflows, Software Training ABOUT HMC DIGITAL PRACTICE GROUP hmcarchitects.com
  4. WHAT DROVE INTEREST IN DIGITAL TWINS • My Company wants

to provide better projects to clients • How to get a better design from project history • Need better data from models • Data gathering from buildings after close out • We then moved forward to research Digital Twins and their benefit to a project lifecycle
  5. WHAT IS A DIGITAL TWIN? • The twin is constructed

so that it can receive input from sensors gathering data from a real-world counterpart. • This allows the twin to simulate the physical object in real time, in the process offering insights into performance and potential problems. • In essence, a digital twin is a computer program that takes real-world data about a physical object or system as inputs and produces as outputs predications or simulations of how that physical object or system will be affected by those inputs A digital twin is a digital representation of a physical object or system
  6. INGREDIENTS IOT CLOUD DATA Devices, Storage and Cloud services all

got really cheap and highly integrated which was a boom to the IoT services market https://www.digitalconnectmag.com/how‐to‐manage‐your‐iot‐adoption‐before‐it‐makes‐a‐mess/
  7. USE CASES Manufacturing Vehicles Healthcare Structures & Buildings Factory automation

simulation Autonomous vehicles and Telemetry Sensors Devices for monitoring the human body Monitor energy use and equipment in buildings
  8. BENEFITS OF DIGITAL TWINS & IOT DEVICES • Real time

look at what’s happening to physical assets • All maintenance history and operations metrics in one place • No more binders and paper logs to sort through • Scalable operations from small to large projects • Predict outcomes based on historical data from device data
  9. SHARED BENEFITS Owners Facility Managers AEC Firms Equipment Manufacturers Access

data of your assets and explore ways to improve operations for long term ROI Easier access to aggregated information of the facility with real time data over the cloud Value added services to design and construction from the project team Connected lifecycle of IoT devices to help support and inform the operations of the Building
  10. WHAT IS PROPELLING GROWTH? • Profit is propelling growth •

Save cost on operations with real time data for maintenance and updates • Track usage patterns for efficient future expansion • Monetize data of property portfolios to potential clients • Competitive edge in property market for private ownership
  11. WHERE TO BEGIN Know what you want Where are the

Opportunities Plan it out Adjust your operations Factory automation simulation Autonomous vehicles and Telemetry Sensors Devices for monitoring the human body Monitor energy use and equipment in buildings
  12. WHAT DO YOU WANT TO ACHIEVE? Building Performance Information User

Feedback Automation you need sensors and analytics you need human facing services to complement the data you need integrated services and planning across operations
  13. KEEP IT SIMPLE Sensors Models Hosting Physical devices that report

on real world activity Digital Versions of the physical environment Services that connect sensors to models and other endpoints
  14. DATA • Digital Twins thrive on data • The more

organized and timely the data the better
  15. DATABASE What is a Database? A database is a structured

set of DATA held in a computer, especially one that is accessible in various ways.
  16. DATA FORMATS IFC CSV JSON XML Factory automation simulation Autonomous

vehicles and Telemetry Sensors Devices for monitoring the human body Monitor energy use and equipment in buildings https://applerepairstation.com/csv‐vs‐xml‐vs‐json‐which‐is‐the‐best‐response‐data‐format/
  17. DEFINITION WHAT IS BIM? BIM is "building information modelling" data.

It's a specialized kind of DATA used by architects and construction professionals, which often contains both building geometry (the 3D model of the building) and metadata (like its cost, heat properties, operating instructions, etc)
  18. SPECIALISTS BIM Manager Facility Manager Data Analyst Developer Factory automation

simulation Autonomous vehicles and Telemetry Sensors Devices for monitoring the human body Monitor energy use and equipment in buildings
  19. CRITICAL BIM ASSETS ‐ CHECKLIST □ BIM execution plan □

Common Data Environment for a Single Source of Truth □ Naming Standards □ Common File types for exchange □ Coordinated models to LOD 400 + □ Federated models through Clash Coordination □ Cloud Hosted models and project content □ Recurring meetings and Review of Assets over the project term
  20. WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE? VISUALIZATIONS 3D Models Charts VR/AR

Maps Geometric representation of design or asset Information displayed in a structured format Equipment that immerses someone into a simulated experience Description of an area through 2D or 3D projection
  21. URBAN SCALE TWINS Helsinki is Building a Digital Twin of

the City ‐ AEC Business (aec‐business.com)
  22. BRINGING IT ALTOGHER • Surprise ╰(*°▽°*)╯ – there is no

single software solution • You have suites and packages and data • But each team has to condition their data and models for digital twin • Create connections to the physical environment • Get live updates from physical equipment • Have a place to store the data • Analyze the data for breakdowns, trends, notifications, usage etc, • Update your equipment and Digital Twin assets • Repeat • Forever • Just like the real building the work is ongoing
  23. THE FIRST STEPS • Usually a part of RFQ from

owners • At this point it is a separate service from Design and Constructions • Normally part of Facility Management or Operations • Depending on owner project scope, budget, building operator • Could be hand offs from one group to another but will require validation and commissioning
  24. BUSINESS CASE RFP Pilot Program ROI Opportunity Include in your

proposals as part of the service State it as a pilot project with your client Describe the potential Return on Investment Explore and provide results of the process
  25. COORDINATING OVER TIME FOR DELIVERY Where it becomes a catch‐up

in a hurry Where it can be steadily added to your workflow
  26. YOUR PROJECT TEAM SETUP Assess Plan Document Training CDE Cloud

Host Analyze Data Study Trends Update Operations Repeat
  27. HMC DIGITAL PRACTICE INITIATIVES ‐ KNOW WHAT YOU WANT Cloud

Practice Automation Data Driven Everything on the cloud for universal access Speed up operations of repetitive tasks Reports for operations and management to review relevant metrics
  28. FUTURE PROOF ‐ ROADMAPS • Network folder to BIM 360

Docs 2022 • Training ‐ Essentials • Standards • Authorized uses (BEP) • Long Term Projects (Campus) • Single source of truth is 360/Pro • BIM 360 database is integrated with HMC database • Digital Twins as a service to the Clients 3 months 6‐9 months 1‐2 years 2023 2021 2020 Reorganization • Cloud App integrations • Cloud Native workflows • Other cloud platforms with Autodesk
  29. REVIEW KEY POINTS • Digital Twins are virtual representations of

physical assets • All Digital Twins exist in a Schema of connected devices and services • Standardizing bodies can provide common ground for planning a Digital Twin Strategy • BIM represents data and geometric modeling • There are many modes of visualization for BIM and Digital Twins available • Create a business plan and roadmap for your organization to try Digital Twins and BIM • Find opportunities to use Digital Twins in your projects as proof of concept
