7. the best systems were hand-made

8. there were three priorities

9. maximizing speed

10. managing heat

13. in addition to RAM upgrades, CPU speed was critical that

    need for speed led to...

14. overclocking: setting CPUs to run at speeds higher than their

    ratings

15. overclocking was done by adjusting settings in the computer’s BIOS

    impacting the front-side bus (connection between CPU and memory) and the voltage

16. this meant that you got more speed than you paid

    for but there were risks:

17. speed: circuits have a finite lifespan, so overclocked units deteriorated

    faster

18. heat: stability decreased as temperatures rose

19. with speed came heat, and heat killed

21. cooling: all cooling systems took heat away from heat- sensitive

    components

22. fans worked...

23. but liquid cooling was way more awesome

24. liquid cooling: used pumped coolant that pulled heat along with

    it coolant cycled through a radiator, then was returned to the component

25. most importantly, though...

26. as in life, sometimes looking good trumped performance
