Article Level Metrics: A Research Impact Footprint Martin Fenner http://www.flickr.com/photos/boegh/5676497233/
Scientometrics is the science of measuring and analysing science with
citation analysis as an important tool.
Article-Level Metrics (ALM) are a comprehensive and multi- dimensional suite
of transparent and established metrics at the article level. http://article-level-metrics.plos.org/alm-info/
altmetrics is the creation and study of new metrics based
on the Social Web for analyzing, and informing scholarship. http://altmetrics.org/about/
Post-publication peer review is the process whereby scientific studies are
absorbed into the body of knowledge. Richard Smith http://blogs.bmj.com/bmj/2011/04/06/ richard-smith-what-is-post-publication- peer-review/
Information overload. It‘s not filter failure, it is a discovery
deficit. Cameron Neylon http://www.slideshare.net/CameronNeylon/ its-not-filter-failure-its-a-discovery-deficit
Attention is the new currency. Kristen Ratan http://www.slideshare.net/kristenratan/ metrics-the-new-black
The PLoS ALM project was started in 2009 and tracks
usage, citations and the social web activity for all PLoS articles.
I started working for the PLoS ALM project one month
ago.
Today I want to focus on future ALM developments. I
will start with some ideas and hope for a great discussion.
Shifting emphasis from the collection to the understanding of article-level
metrics.
Stronger focus on the formal and informal discussion of an
article.
Generate context for ALM by comparing the numbers to similar
articles – e.g. from the same subject category.
Add visualizations that explain ALM much better than numbers.
Add search to ALM to find articles based on metrics.
Personalize ALM for readers and authors.
Allow readers to actively interact with ALM: comments, bookmarks, links,
etc.
The attention received by an article can be evaluated and
used both by authors and the journal for improvements.
Equally important, help with the adoption of ALM by other
journals, institutions and funders.
