  1. Every instrument or device installed in a plant has to

be connected to cables for the power supply and the transfer of signals. And each instrument or device has its own specifications for power rating and connections for control cables. Cable Sizing means the proper selection of the cables for the right purpose. For example we have 3 core, 4 core, 5 pair etc. So Choosing the right cable as per the instrument or device’s specifications is cable sizing. WHAT IS CABLE SIZING ?
  2. Final Conclusion The final conclusion depends on the following three

factors.  Comparison of Ampacity  Cable derated current > Full load current  Voltage Drop at Steady State Condition  Allowed voltage drop > calculated voltage drop  Voltage Drop at Starting Condition  Allowed voltage drop > calculated voltage drop
  3. Ampacity  Full load current = Full load ampere /

root 3  Cable derated current = Ampere rating in single way duct X Overall derated factor X no of runs
  4. Voltage drop at steady state This applies only for a

    3 phase supply  Voltage drop = [ root (3) X (full load current /2) X cable length X { conductor reistance X pf at rated load + reactance X sin phi } ] / Operating Voltage
  5. Voltage drop at starting condition This applies only for a

    3 phase supply  Voltage drop = [ root (3) X starting current X cable length X { conductor reistance X pf at rated load + reactance X sin phi } ] / Operating voltage
  6.  Full load Ampere = (Motor rating X 1000) /

(Power factor at rated load X efficiency at rated load X switchboard voltage)
  7.  Active power = Motor rating X (intermittent power /

efficiency at rated load )  Reactive power = Active power X tan(cos-1(power factor at load factor ))

  13. Derating factors are due to…  SOIL THERMAL RESISTIVITY 

DEPTH OF LAYING  GROUPING FACTOR  GROUND TEMPERATURE
  14. OVERALL DERATING FACTOR  OVERALL DERATING FACTOR = PRODUCT OF

 SOIL THERMAL RESISTIVITY  DEPTH OF LAYING  GROUPING FACTOR  GROUND TEMPERATURE
