ITDEV JDS Lightning Talk-Remote Work

ITDEV JDS Lightning Talk-Remote Work

A lightning talk session held by ITDEV division of Jabar Digital Service (JDS). In the beginning of COVID-19 pandemic, JDS had to get used to remote/hybrid work. I shared my experience when I worked remotely for a venture capital firm in 2018.

  1. My Background - Worked for a venture capital firm as

full-stack developer - A one-year remote work from coworking space/home, with monthly visit to the office for one week - A small dev team, consisted of one Head of Tech and two fellow developers - Communication methods: Slack, Zoom, WhatsApp
  2. Flexible Working Hours - Beware of jargons like “Flexible Working

Hours” and “Flexible Work Arrangement”. - Separate work and life to prevent burnout or underworking. - Establish a healthy daily schedule, and stick to it. - Work together physically with teammates once every few days/weeks, if possible. It helps us to maintain a normal work schedule.
  3. Communication - Asynchronous communication over synchronous communication. - But: -

Use synchronous communication when it is easier to explain things verbally. - Don’t forget to write down the result of our discussion, preferably using digital platforms (chat app, task management app etc.).
  4. Communication - Over-communication is better than no communication at all.

Don’t assume people think exactly the same way as we do. - Mind the tone and punctuation when using asynchronous communication.
  5. Dealing with Distractions - Focus on one task at a

given time. Multitasking doesn’t make us more productive. Set priority for each incoming task. - Establish personal time management method during work. For example, Pomodoro technique. - Turn notifications off when we really need time to concentrate. - Set physical work-life boundaries (different room, different building, different laptop etc.)
