Data Storage

Data Storage

Done for college. I myself consider it to be my first presentation which actually looks pretty good. And the presentation rocked in College - people liked it and everyone learned something.

  1. Data is information. Information of any kind - a sound,

an image, text or anything really.
  2. Invented in 1725 by a textile worker, he used it

to control looms. In 1890, it was modified by Herman Hollerith and used in America to take the Census in just ONE year. Earlier in 1880, the Census took EIGHT years.
  3. Casette Tape(660 KB per side) Once used as a cheap

way for storing data, it was later replaced by floppies. 1972
  4. The Floppy Disk(1.2 MB) 1976 Tremendously popular consumer mass storage

device. Was used widely for storing documents and even OSes.
  5. The Digital Audio Tape[DAT](1.3 GB) Was going to be high-end

music recording device, but then later became storage for computers. 1987
  6. The Compact Disc(700 MB) The format is still widely used.

Its low price, small size and large storage capacity helped it to survive the rise of ZIP and JAZ disks. 1990
  7. Was made to replace the floppy. But was too expensive

and later the ZIP disk replaces it. MiniDisc MD Data(140 MB) 1993
  8. ZIP Disk(100 MB) Was used to store large files. Quickly

replaced floppy discs and was favoured over CD-Rs because it was re-writable. 1994
  9. Seagate Barracuda (2.5 GB at first) First 7200 RPM drive,

a speed that has become a standard now. 1996
  10. IBM 170 Microdrive (had 170 MB when first released) Before

flash memory was large and cheap enough for consumer electronics, these small drives went into the first iPods. Apple continued using them to the new iPod Classics. 1999
  11. The Pen Drive (had 8 MB when IBM first released

it) Became amazingly popular and quickly killed almost every other way of portable storage. 2000
  12. The SD Card or memory card (had just 32 MB

storage when first released) Gained widespread popularity in handheld devices like phones and cameras. Thin as a coin, these devices are no longer restricted by their physical size. 2000
  13. SSDs or Solid State Drives With no moving parts, faster

boot times and less physical space - they are now the new way we store digital media. 2008
  14. Evolution of storage Storing information is an inherent part of

the human race. As we evolve, we develop more efficient ways of storing data. Let us take the storage of music for example :
  15. And because of the way it's built, it may be

broken and made useless quite easily. If you don't believe me, try dropping a PC hard drive from your height to the floor.
  16. SSDs are a faster, smaller, quieter and more reliable way

of storing data. But as of now, they are expensive(and hence not as cheap as normal hard drives).
  17. SSDs are (more or less) almost exactly the same as

pen drives, external storage drives, memory cards, etc.
  18. “ I think there is a world market for maybe

five computers. ” - said in 1943 by Thomas J. Watson (CEO of IBM once upon a time) lagta hain budhau satya gaya tha...
