The second type are building blocks that are really just
squashed versions of other characters.
They have become squished over the years so that they
fit more snugly into complex combination characters.
So I tend to just call them “xxx (squished to
the side)” Not terribly academic, perhaps, but it gets the point across!
The meanings of these building blocks very often give you
a huge clue as to the meaning of the combination characters that they are used in, so they are well worth knowing!
