How to respect the code and be proud of your
legacy?
Hello, I’m Bruno Correia! an Android developer and a Peanut
Butter addict. Also co-founder of Pink Room. @bffcorreia
Let me start with a story...
I started working at Nourish Care in 2014
The Plan • Build an Android app ◦ Few screens
◦ Good specification ◦ Low complexity
Define the process and the tools
Start the implementation
An App was born and things were going smooth
But...
Product evolves • More features • Small changes • New
design • Big changes • More complexity • ...
And we do our best!
But then...
Technology evolves • New frameworks • New libraries • New
architectures • New ways of thinking and doing things • ...
None
You also evolve
Maybe someone will join your team
3+ years passed...
Tips and lessons learned!
Things change! You change... 1
Every now and then you will want to change your
entire codebase!
None
Learn how to live with legacy code
Change is unavoidable
Be consistent across all your codebase
Define processes and tools 2
No processes, no party!
Define the right tools for the job.
Choose the right tools for your team, not for you!
Yes. You will need a CI/CD pipeline.
Have fun! 3
Have fun while doing your job.
Be part of the community!
Contribute with open source projects.
Do a step back 4
Remember, change is unavoidable!
Plan well, then change.
Your code doesn’t need to be always perfect! 5
Your code quality depends heavily on context!
But you should never do this...
Good practices 6
Naming
Naming
Aim for readability, not performance!
Isolate complexity
Test your code!
Delegate!
Pick an architecture and be consistent.
Test your code!
Avoid premature abstractions.
Seriously, test your code!
Respect the code! 7
Thank you!
