O N Fractions Are Just Equal Parts A fraction shows how much of something you have when it’s split into equal parts. The top number tells us how many parts we’re talking about. The bottom number tells us how many equal parts make up the whole. Think of sharing a pizza or cutting a sandwich into equal pieces — that’s a fraction in action! 1 out of 4 cookies = 1/4 brainstermath.com 2

T The Two Parts of a Fraction Every fraction has two numbers that work together. Numerator The top number. It tells us how many parts we have. Example: in 3/5, the numerator is 3. Denominator The bottom number. It tells us how many equal parts make the whole. Example: in 3/5, the denominator is 5. Memory trick: Denominator = “Down”-ominator — it’s the number down at the bottom! brainstermath.com 3

T Types of Fractions You Will See Proper Fractions Numerator is smaller than the denominator. 1/2, 3/4, 2/5 Improper Fractions Numerator is larger than the denominator. 5/4, 7/3 Mixed Numbers A whole number combined with a fraction. 1 1/2, 2 3/4 Equivalent Fractions Different fractions that represent the same value. 1/2 = 2/4 = 4/8 brainstermath.com 4

X A M P L E S Fractions Show Up Every Day The best way to understand fractions is through everyday experiences. Pizza Slices 4 of 8 slices eaten = 4/8 of the pizza. Sharing a Sandwich Cut into 4 equal pieces — each piece is 1/4. Measuring Ingredients Baking uses 1/2 cup, 1/4 cup, 3/4 cup. Reading the Clock “Quarter past” means 1/4; “half past” means 1/2. brainstermath.com 5

N E Y When Are Fractions Introduced? A general guide to what students learn, grade by grade. 1 Grades 1–2 Equal parts, halves, quarters, and visual fraction models. 2 Grade 3 Comparing fractions, numerators and denominators, number lines. 3 Grades 4–5 Adding, subtracting, simplifying, equivalent fractions, mixed numbers. Every student learns at a different pace — don’t worry if concepts take time to click. brainstermath.com 6

E N T S Common Mistakes (and How to Fix Them) Unequal Parts Dividing something into uneven pieces and still calling them fractions. Parts must always be equal. Mixing Up the Numbers Reversing numerator and denominator. The “Down-ominator” trick helps. Adding Denominators 1/4 + 1/4 becomes 2/4, not 2/8. Visual models like pizza slices make this clear. Memorizing Without Understanding Learning rules without knowing what fractions represent. Start with visuals, then formulas. brainstermath.com 7

H O M E Build Confidence Without Worksheets No expensive materials needed — just everyday moments. Pizza Fractions Ask: “If we eat 2 of 8 slices, what fraction is left?” Cookie Sharing Share cookies among family members and name each fraction. Kitchen Measuring Ask: “Can you find 1/2 cup? What do two 1/4 cups equal?” brainstermath.com 8

Y S What to Remember About Fractions A fraction is a part of a whole — equal parts, always. The numerator (top) shows how many parts we have; the denominator (bottom) shows the total equal parts. Fractions are everywhere: pizza, sandwiches, recipes, and the clock. Visual, real-life examples build understanding faster than memorized rules. Every child learns at their own pace — patience and practice build confidence. brainstermath.com 9
