Stressor User Group Technologically sophisticated knowledge workers (white collar workers and students) who receive many emails every day Reeta Banerjee | Jonathan (Jasper) Sherman-Presser | Borui Wang | Designing Calm | 2013
Wang | Designing Calm | 2013 • Most test users did not previously receive auditory notifications on their phone to indicate receipt of an email • People have different frequency of checking the email and some people checked their email before receiving a notification. • Some users appreciated being notified for important emails, as long as they're actually important. User Feedback • "I felt that the new system freed me up from constantly checking my email a bit. I felt less compelled to constantly check it with every visual notification if I knew the important stuff would trigger a text." • "I'm not sure I love having audio notifications for new emails, but I did really appreciate that this was a system that called out important vs. not important emails at the outset." • "I normally turn off all notifications. I prefer to work through my emails when I have a fixed block of time that is available. The system was not helpful because it increases my frequency of checking emails and creates distraction."
