Where are you headed?
For most of us, the answer depends on our values.
Values are like a compass for our lives.
They lead us in certain directions by guiding our choices
and actions.
Values are NOT the same thing as goals.
Goals are specific, and can be checked off like tasks.
Values are more general - something we might pursue our
whole lives and still never “finish.”
Think about your life as a college student. What values
guide your actions and help you set academic goals?
When we ask other students this question, they often list
values like: 4 Opening doors for the future 4 Making friends and family proud 4 Achievement 4 Persistence 4 Learning new things
Values also give life meaning.
Your habits become your values. Your values become your destiny.
— Mahatma Gandhi
When we are connecting with our values, we feel motivated
and engaged.
Values can even help us make sense of painful feelings.
Don’t believe me?
Try this experiment for yourself.
Think about what you just said was stressing you out.
Is it stressful because it threatens something that you value?
Often we are most upset by things that threaten our
progress towards values.
For example: If you value achievement, not doing well in
a class is very upsetting.
Now for the good news.
You already identified steps you can take to control your
stress in the present.
Just by doing those, you are moving one step closer
to your values.
Ready to begin?
