  1. grass * This element often appears in kanji involving plants,

flowers, and other vegetation. Remember it as two shoots of grass poking up through the ground, with their roots beneath them. Element meanings: grass, flowers. It always appears above another element.
  2. young 艹 grass + 右 right Picture a young child

carrying a bunch of flowers in her right hand. Or think of Alice in Wonderland: “The flowers on the right will make you younger. The ones on the left will make you older.”
  3. dog 大 large + 丶 drop Picture a large dog

like a St. Bernard. Such big dogs are always hot and panting, so add a drop of drool.
  4. cow ¥ Picture a cow’s face: The drop on the

left is a horn. The first horizontal line is the top of the head; the second is the eyes. The vertical line adds the other horn and the nose. Note that the stroke order changes when cow appears as a left-hand element: the second horizontal line is drawn last and slanted up. Above another element, the bottom stroke is cut short, as in 告 or 先.
  5. special 牜 cow + 寺 temple In India, the cow

is a special animal—it can even wander into a temple.
  6. umbrella * We will borrow the name for this element

from the kanji for ‘umbrella’ 傘, but it’s not hard to see it as a cross-section of an open umbrella.
  7. jammed in umbrella +丿curved stick +丨stick Here we see an

umbrella with a curved handle on the left, but someone has jammed in a second stick. Or remember it as an umbrella with a J and I Jammed In.
  8. world 田 rice field + 介 jammed in The world

today has more than 7 billion people. There aren’t enough rice fields to feed all the people who are jammed in.
  9. tea 艹 grass + umbrella + 木 tree I like

to enjoy my tea while sitting on the grass under an umbrella with a wooden pole.
