  1. dart * Picture this element as a rough drawing of

a dart: the hook on the end of the downward stroke is the point, and the horizontal line adds feathers to help it fly. Might that drop in the upper corner be a drop of blood? This element often wraps around the top and right- hand side of another element; in this position, the horizontal line extends a little longer, as in 式.
  2. ceremony 弋 dart + 工 craft What kind of ceremony

is this? I don’t know, but it uses darts crafted specifically for this event.
  3. test 言 say + 式 ceremony How did you do

on the test? You don’t want to say? Well, we’ll all find out at the ceremony anyway—the principal is going to announce the highest score.
  4. stop 卜 magic wand + 一 floor +丨stick The wizard

slammed his magic wand, which looked like an old stick, into the floor, and shouted, “Stop! You shall not pass!”
  5. walk 止 stop + 少 few A baby learning to

walk has to stop every few steps. When you walk your dog, you may have to stop a few times to clean up after your pet.
  6. correct 一 one + 止 stop After you get the

correct answer one time, you can stop.
  7. mending * This element looks a lot like 正 correct,

but the curves of the last two strokes as a sense of motion, so we’ll think of it as an action verb: “making correct”, i.e. mending something.
  8. run 十 ten + 疋 mending After you run ten

marathons, you will need to mend your socks!
  9. foot 口 mouth + 疋 mending It’s too late to

mend this situation; I’ve already put my foot in my mouth. (Maybe I should just run away…) Note that the mending element shares its first stroke with the last stroke of mouth. Element meanings: foot, leg. As a left-hand element, foot loses its curves:⻊. You may wish to think of this version as a stiff wooden leg.
  10. topic 日 day + 疋 mending + 頁 page My

professor didn’t like my essay topic. I’ve been working all day to mend it, but so far I’ve only written one page.
