2. strong 弓 bow + ム elbow + 虫 insect There was a legendary archer who was rumored to be very strong. In fact, he was actually quite weak; he was always assisted by an insect that supported his elbow and helped him draw the bow.
3. dollar sign 弓 bow +丿curved stick +丨stick This kanji used to be used for American dollars, due to its resemblance to the dollar sign $. Just as $ can be written with either one or two vertical lines, 弗 also has a simplified form used as an element: the first stick is removed, except for the curved tail, as we will see in 弟 younger brother.
4. younger brother 丷 horns + 弗 dollar sign My younger brother is a greedy little devil—you can almost see the horns on his head and the dollar signs in his eyes.
5. slingshot * Remember this element as a simpler version of 弓 bow: it is smaller, lacking the first stroke.
6. give slingshot + 一 one Give a man a fish, and you feed him for one day. Give a man one slingshot, and he probably still won’t be very good at fishing.
7. copy 冖 crown + 与 give Burger King gives a crown to each customer, but it’s just a cardboard copy.
8. old man 土 dirt + 丿 stick + 匕 spoon The old man can neither walk nor eat as well as he once did; instead, he just sits on the ground with his walking stick and his porridge spoon beside him. As an element, we will use just the top half of this kanji, keeping the old man meaning: The spoon will be replaced by other elements.
9. consider old man + slingshot Consider carefully before shooting an old man with a slingshot. Even if you use a child’s toy, it’s still considered a crime.
10. teach old man + 子 child + 攵 taskmaster A teacher: An old man who watches over children and serves as their strict taskmaster.
11. someone old man + 日 day Picture an old man talking about his glory days. “Back in MY day, I really used to be someone.”
