Simple Techniques for a Kicka$$ Resume Han Chang
[email protected]
I’ve read a lot of resumes.
Most of them could be a helluvalot better.
“You will never get a second chance to make a
first impression .” Why is it important to have a good resume?
It wasn’t always the quality of the applicant that sucked...
But instead, the quality of their communication could be improved.
Anatomy of a Traditional Resume - Objective - Experience -
Education - Projects
Traditional resumes were designed for the Industrial Revolution
We are now living in the digital era
Some simple changes will dramatically improve your resume...
But first, we gotta get into the right mindset.
“What is a resume?”
It’s just a chronological list of jobs you’ve had. Right?
WRONG!
Your resume is an ADVERTISEMENT !
It should have ONE and ONLY ONE goal in life.
To SELL your 1337 coding skillz...
... to companies that are hiring software devs...
... and convince them to give you an interview.
Too much theory... Let’s move on to real life examples!
So... what are some properties of good ads? (Besides sex
appeal, of course.)
Properties of Effective Resumes / Ads 1. Relevant
Traditional resumes list your work history in chronological order.
How the hell is this relevant?! (It’s not.)
Always put your relevant projects at the TOP...
...regardless of whether they are work projects OR personal projects.
Whoa, this is totally breaking the rules!
How does this actually help you?
Your skills will EXACTLY MATCH the company’s needs.
You shall pass the HR buzzword filters.
You will control your Ima!
In the movies, some actors are always typecast.
People automatically categorize things.
What if you’re a Java developer... who really wants to
switch to ?
Traditional Resume: Sorry, out of luck.
2. Interesting Properties of Effective Resumes / Ads
Include something FUN!
Use it as an icebreaker for awkward interview silence!
This will make the interviewer LIKE YOU.
3. Emphasize BENEFITS Properties of Effective Resumes / Ads
Do not include company jargon. (Nobody knows what it means.)
Mention the of the technology stack. IMPACT!
How did your contribution kill pain or make money?
Hint: Saving time is a great way to do both.
Follow these guidelines to make your chances of getting an
interview skyrocket!
If you’d like for me to give some feedback on
your resume...
