What a photo file still carries

A short preflight for anyone publishing a JPEG or PNG: camera files, editor exports, and AI stills. What metadata often travels with the pixels, why an orientation tag can rotate the image on a CDN, and the order to follow before the file goes on a site or into a social upload.

  1. The file is more than pixels A camera JPEG, an

export from an editor, or a still from an AI tool often includes a metadata block the viewer never sees. 2 / 11
  2. What commonly rides along - Date, camera, or software name

    - GPS, when the phone saved a location - An orientation tag that says how the pixels should be rotated - On some AI exports, a content-credential block such as C2PA 3 / 11
  3. The same file travels further than the camera roll A

portfolio page, a docs site, a client folder, and a social upload can all receive that original. The host does not always strip the block for you. 4 / 11
  4. Orientation is the tag that breaks layout If the pixels

stay sideways and only the Orientation tag says rotate, a resizer or image CDN can display the photo wrong. Bake the rotation into the pixels, then leave Orientation as normal. 5 / 11
  5. Location is the tag that gives away the shoot A

GPS block is enough to place where the picture was taken. Remove it from the copy you publish. Keep the untouched original in your archive. 6 / 11
  6. Order of work - Duplicate the file. Leave the master

alone. - Check what the copy still contains. - Bake orientation, then drop the tags you do not want public. - Publish that copy only. 7 / 11
  7. A browser pass, when you skip the command line When

you do not want a command-line tool, do this step in the browser: remove AI label The page redraws the image the way the browser already shows it, then writes a new file without those extra tags. It re-encodes, so the master stays in your archive. 8 / 11
  8. Limits to keep in mind - A label a platform

adds after the file is already live stays on that live post. - Cleaning the file does not prove whether a picture is or is not AI. - The original stays in your archive either way. 9 / 11
  9. Before you hit publish - The master is archived. -

The published copy has no GPS. - The photo is upright, with Orientation set to normal. - You uploaded the cleaned copy, not the camera original. 10 / 11
