Incubation Details of review, existing process at; http://www.apereo.org/incubation Online survey + interviews soliciting community opinion Monday, 3 June 13 Part way through process - interviews being conducted this week, online survey closes at end of the week. This is really about how we focus the experience of the community to help a project move from innovation to sustainability. We sometimes seem to use the word sustainability as shorthand for something permanently sustained. That isn’t what we mean. Some software is necessarily more transient. So it’s important to regard incubation as part of the project lifecycle. I want to offer you some of the opinions submitted so far. I’m going to walk through several of them, and then invite comment and discussion. There’s a group of volunteers managing this process with me - chaired by Jaeques Koeman of Edia. This is also an opportunity for them to meet and exchange views face to face. Want to emphasise that these selections are my own, not those of the group.
3. Software Dev’s (by and large) want a process that is lighter. Monday, 3 June 13
4. IT Managers range from wanting something approaching a quality mark, to a sign of sustainability. Monday, 3 June 13
5. Difference around software/ technical steps - some view them as essential, others believe they shouldn’t be there at all. Monday, 3 June 13 Many comments have been couched in almost formal project management speak. How far do we understand open approaches. Compare and contrast to Apache.
6. Should focus on openness measures - the technical stuff then becomes transparent. Monday, 3 June 13 And will be different for every product
7. Accessibility, i8n and scaleability are about governance process, not about technical measures Apereo can’t undertake. Monday, 3 June 13 Who will do scaleability testing? What scale, other than appropriate, are we aiming for?
8. Licensing - consistency? BSD-like, Apache 2, ECL 2 versus allowing GPL type licenses. No consensus. Monday, 3 June 13
9. Not enough focus on mentoring in current process. Should be the *main* focus. Monday, 3 June 13 Who will do scaleability testing? What scale, other than appropriate, are we aiming for?
