ABOUT NEW KIND OF DESIGN
"New Kind or Design" is a research I started in 2005 about several trends that have been shaping and transforming the field of Design.
The research was intentionally a decade long before publication to allow time to prune the trend lines and analyze what are the ingredients of failure or success.
The research encompasses themes such as Interaction Design, Internet of Things, Crowdsourcing, Layering, D.I.Y & digital fabrication, Computational Design etc. and are in the form of approximatively a thousand case studies that are used in lessons and conferences to infuse inspiration and extract working principles and strategies that can be applied operatively in many different fields.
The case studies extract the essence of the principles, the pattern that can be abstracted from a context and applied into another; in this sense, Design, is just a synonym of "Project", which can be adapted to many different types of contexts and jobs: any department of an organization, wither it's management, sales, marketing, design, engineering, etc, anyone, can find a pattern, among the many NKOD cases, that can be applied as a turn key to their specific day to day job.
It's in the presentation of the case studies that it is possible to facilitate that adaptation and contextualization to your specific needs and interest.
ABOUT THIS PRESENTATION
The following slides here introduce some of the case studies relating mainly to the D.I.Y and Computational Design trends that were selected for the MobbelSeminar, a conference on the new production technologies that was held at the The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts Schools of Architecture, Design and Conservation (kadk.dk) on the 4th of december 2014. The purpose of this speech was to accompany the research done by Prof. Eva Paarman of Teko Design+Business at VIA University College.
