    ONTOCHAIN
ONTOCHAIN - Trust traceable and transparent ontological knowledge on blockchain, is
a European project funded by the European Commission under the European Union’s
Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme, and part of the European
Commission’s Next Generation Internet (NGI) initiative.
ONTOCHAIN was launched in September 2020 to empower innovators and
end users through 3 Open Calls to develop blockchain-based knowledge
management solutions that will be part of a novel software ecosystem for a
better share of knowledge and value.

    HOW? WHERE DO WE STAND?
✔3 Open Calls with up to Up to 4,2 M € funding
    ❖ OC1 Research : Design
Specifying the ONTOCHAIN framework as human centric decentralised & trustworthy
solution based on available technologies. A first batch of specifications have been
delivered by 17 Teams in phase one of the call and 7 remaining Teams will delivered the
full ONTOCHAIN framework in September 2021.
❖ OC2 Protocol suite and software ecosystem foundations : Implementation
Building the ONTOCHAIN concept for the creation of a trustworthy information/service
exchange process & a more trustworthy content handling. This call aims to deliver the
    ONTOCHAIN Framework prototypes.
    ❖ OC3 Application and experimentation : Deployment 2022

    TODAY
✓ Participate in the generation and use of knowledge like never before.
✓ Digital life is an extension of our physical world.
     Centralization of power
     Unknown provenance of information
     Anonymity and unreliable identities
 No fair rewards for good quality contributions
➢ The way knowledge is generated, curated and stored raises effectively some
concerns and it is the time to handle our digital life with the same critical, moral
and ethical thinking that we use in our physical world

    FUTURE
The internet of the future should be more
    Resilient Trustworthy Sustainable
ONTOCHAIN approach is to leverage Semantic Web
and blockchain assets to built as a distinct added
value for the next generation internet.

    SEMANTIC WEB

    BLOCKCHAIN
Set of technologies that focus on
    data, i.e., how they are
    described, modelled, and linked.
    A technology that aims at
storing data and share such data
among a set of peers, who
    validate the content without the
    intervention of a third-party
    services.
Trustworthiness is achieved by standardised storage and ontologies on one hand
as well as on the other hand by the decentralisation and data immutability

    ▪ Addressing the information needs of
    semantically complex, dynamic, trust-
    critical ecosystems
    ▪ Trusted data, metadata, ontology,
    knowledge and information
    management
    ▪ Ontologies + Blockchain
    ▪ Permissioned, Regulated by the
    people
    ▪ Fostering plurality and democracy
    ▪ Trusted, on-chain approaches

  11. | ONTOCHAIN.NGI.EU
    KEY OBJECTIVES
    ❖ Reputation management
Generic decentralized reputation management functionality in the blockchain and
    different decentralized reputation models
    ❖ Trusted data semantics
Bring data semantics in the blockchain framework, so as to track data provenance,
data handling and data manipulations throughout the data lifecycle.
❖ General data protection and marketplaces based on trusted knowledge and
    information
Address several challenges to unlock the tremendous potential of blockchains,
especially before this paradigm shift becomes technically, economically and legally viable in
    business environments.

    ❖ On-block storage of ontologies,
    instances
    ❖ Information replication based on
    security needs
❖ Possibility for split and join operations
    with ONTOBLOCKs
❖ Quality of Service managements with
    trade-offs for ONTOBLOCKs: in
    memory, temporary usage of blocks,
storage for indefinite time, number of
    replicas versus storage cost etc.
❖ Trusted approaches for ontologies and

THE KNOWLEDGE BLOCK TREE AND FOREST
Trees of ONTOBLOCKs may form a Knowledge Block Forest
    ❖ Designed for indefinite usage
❖ Supporting services for continuous Knowledge Block Forest operation:
    ❑ ONTOBLOCKS split & join
    ❑ ONTOBLOCKs archiving
    ❑ ONTOBLOCKs defragmentation
    ❑ In memory ONTOBLOCKs
    ❑ High security ONTOBLOCKs
❑ Moving blocks vertically or horizontally
❑ Local versus Global decision making
    ❖ Geographic mapping of ONTOBLOCKs
❖ Top blocks have much higher security, are kept in memory, regularly
    copied between countries
❖ Trust in the provided information!

ambitious Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) applications in areas such as :
❖ Trustworthy web and social media
    ❖ Trustworthy crowdsensing
    ❖ Trustworthy service orchestration
❖ Decentralised and unsupervised online social networks
Successfull : if this ecosystem of innovative applications is widely and sustainably
adopted by vital sectors of the European economy.
    That is our intention!
