Casino Gaming for the Mathematically Inclined

Casino Gaming for the Mathematically Inclined

All games are not created equal. In some games the house edge should rightly keep you from even trying. But which games come close to a level playing field? If you are going to play, at least have a fighting chance. An overview of casino gaming.

Learn how to play several casino games.
Learn how to play smartly to avoid some really bad math.
What kind of house advantage is built in against you?
How much "homework" must you do to get ready?
Which games are entirely luck, and where can you maybe gain an edge?

  1. 3 “Because the house always wins. Play long enough, you

never change the stakes, the house takes you. Unless, when that perfect hand comes along, you bet big, and then you take the house.” - Danny Ocean
  2. 4 You can avoid bad math You can still have

fun May make some money Or at least lose slower
  3. 6 When in Rome... • The eye in the sky

is always watching, don’t look suspicious • Casino chips go on the table, drinks go on the shelf under • Don’t take the cards, dice, or other items out of the field of play • Roulette chips are different and don’t leave the table • Watch a table for a few minutes before you play • Never hand cash to dealer, place on table they will convert to chips • When done you can “color up” to convert to fewer high value chips
  4. 7 Know what you are playing • Know the table

minimum and maximum • Make sure the table is the flavor of the game you prepared for • Blackjack comes in 2^7 * 3^2 * 6 = 6912 flavors • Craps odds range from double to 20X, but 3-4-5X is now common
  5. 8 Don’t be foolish • Never make a bet if

you don’t know the possible outcomes • Don’t bet money you can’t afford to lose • Look for games with a low house edge • Bet in whole numbers, don’t let your win get rounded down • ATMs in casinos have a fee
  6. 9 Join the Player Club • Each casino has a

frequent bettor club • Put your card in the machine to track your play, counts your bets • Put your card on the table when you sit down to get “rated”. Usually related to time at table * average bet. • Earn “comps”. Food, beverages, rooms, free play, free parking, etc
  7. 10 IRS Entanglements • Win big and you will get

a W-2G • $1200 at slots • $5000 in poker tournament • $600 other things with a win over 300 times original bet • You may be able to deduct losses, if you keep good records and itemize • irs.gov/taxtopics/tc419 - Gambling income and losses • Check with your tax professional as needed
  8. 11 Disclaimers • I am not a practicing mathematician, but

I did play one in college • Calculations have been cross checked with https://wizardofodds.com/ • House Edge + Expected Return = 100% • Individual bets can go in either direction, make enough bets and the average returns to the expected result • “8 to 1” == “8:1” == “9 for 1” == bet 1 to collect 9 if you win
