  1. About Macmahon  International mining contractor  Founded in 1963,

more than 50 years’ experience  Listed on the ASX  Employs around 3000 people  Operations throughout Australia, and in New Zealand, South East Asia, Mongolia and Africa  Strong client base
  2. What is raise drilling?  Set the rig up 

Drill the pilot hole  Attach the reamer and pull back  Disassemble the rig
  3. What is the challenge?  Mines are getting deeper and

increased ventilation is required  As mines get deeper, ore haulage shafts are also considered  Macmahon can drill deep vent/ore haulage shafts in a single pass  Competitors would need drill some of these shafts in two stages
  4. The Herrenknecht RBR900VF  Macmahon and Herrenknecht collaborated to design

the largest raise drill in the world  Allows larger, deeper shafts in a single pass  ….currently deployed to BHPB’s Olympic Dam in South Australia 8m 2000m
  5. Large Rig Comparison Rig Type Operating Thrust (Pounds) Operating Torque

  6. RBR900VF rig benefits  Extremely reliable, manufactured with proven tunnel

boring componentry  Relatively compact, easy to transport and set up  Can also access a wide range of locations above and below ground  Rods have been designed to minimize operating area required underground
  7. The Big Rig in action – Breaking Through  The

reamer is pulled all the way to surface  …and through the concrete foundation  The reamer is then secured as the rods are disconnected
  8. The Big Rig in action – Removing the Reamer 

Reamer is lifted out of the shaft with a crane  The bore is completed and will be fitted with exhaust fans for ventilation to the mine  The completed hole may be lined or may remain as is
  9. The Big Rig in action – Olympic Dam  The

RBR900VF completed a 736m x 4.5m hole at Olympic Dam in November last year  The hole was completed ahead of time, and below budget  It has now moved onto a program where it will drill a 565m x 4.5 metre hole  Both holes are for ventilation of the mine
  10. Summary  Macmahon invest in technology to create value for

mining clients  We partner with OEMs to design more efficient mining equipment  We look for ways to differentiate from competitors  We offer a global service aimed at increasing safety standards while decreasing costs for miners
