  1. Atsuko: You’re so tender with her. It seems caring for

a child comes as naturally to you as swordplay.
  2. Yojiro: How did I become a samurai and master swordsman

in one of the most powerful houses in the Shogunate?
  3. Yojiro: Like all boys, we’d often play swordsman in the

streets. We’d fashion swords from bamboo and tree branches. I was 5 years old when I discovered that I could see between the moments. I could predict my opponent’s movements and thus move and strike before they could even react.
  4. Yojiro: When I was 7, I discovered I could earn

money by challenging the older boys to duels. When I was 15, I was going to Sake housed and market places and challenging adults,
  5. Yojiro: Unfortunately, I earned a reputation. One day, a very

rich, very arrogant young samurai in training challenged me, offering a bag of gold.
  6. Yojiro: When I beat him, he became enraged, dropped his

stick, pulled his sword, and attacked.
  7. Yojiro: I easily disarmed him, broke his nose and shattered

his collar bone. His father, a high-ranking noble demanded that I be put to death. However, The young man’s sensei, Grandmaster Shogo Miyagi offered an alternative.
  8. Yojiro: I was become his apprentice. I cooked his meals,

laundered his clothes, cleaned his dojo and learned the way of sword. When I was 18, he presented me with these swords, and tole me there was nothing more he could teach me.
  9. Yojiro: I dedicated my life to instructing soldiers in the

way of sword. Then came to Meiji restoration.
  10. Yojiro: I saw the country change around me. Much of

it for the better. But in this world, sword are banned.
  11. Yojiro: I was an orphan once again. I concealed my

swords and wandered, a masterless Ronin. It’s a terrible thing, to have no purpose.
  12. Yojiro: It will do nothing but bring you pain, and

    then leave you with heartache…
