2. Liberty guiding people In 1830, the Parisians revolt against King Charles X, who wants to bring into question the gains of the Revolution of 1789. To this day, the painting symbolises the struggle of the French people for liberty. This woman of the people symbolises liberty. She is carrying the French flag and wearing the Phrygian bonnet of the revolutionaries of 1789. Liberty Leading the People (1831), Eugène Delacroix. The towers of the Notre Dame cathedral indicate that we are in Paris. Barricades, dead or injured citizens, armed with guns and swords… Liberty is won through struggles. 4. The Storming of the Bastille The 14th July 1789, the Parisian people attack the Bastille, a famous prison that symbolises the power of King Louis XVI. This event marks the beginning of the French revolution. To this day it is celebrated during the National Day. The Storming of the Bastille (1789/1791), anonymous. The cannons of the army threaten to fire to maintain the calm The people are armed with scythes, pickets and batons.

6. The 18th Century: The Age of Enlightenment In the 18th century, scientists and philosophers defend scientific progress, reason and human rights. The first French encyclopedia was published under the leadership of Diderot and d’Alembert, between 1751 and 1772. 10. The Social Inequalities Before the revolution, the royal family and the nobility lead a luxurious life whilst the people live in misery. 13. La liberté, une conquête politique In 1789, the representatives of the people gather to found the first national assembly. 15. The Allegory of Equality The Allegory of Equality (1793), Jean-Guillaume Moitte This woman symbolises equality. She is holding the Declaration of Human and Citizen Rights in her hand. The plumb bob allows people to measure the horizontalness of a surface. Here, it symbolises the equality between all citizens; none of them are higher than the others…

17. The Struggle for Liberty: The Revolutionary Wars After the French Revolution, the monarchies of neighbouring countries team up againt France to re-establish the royal power. 21. Liberty at Work: The Labour Court The Labour Court is a specialised tribunal, in charge of settling individual disputes between employers and employees. The judges of this tribunal are not magistrates. They are representatives of employers and workers.
