  1. Equality at the Time of the Revolution: Privileged People and

Profiteers Nobles, religious figures, magistrates… the French Revolution is born from the frustrations and injustices that the people suffer for the good of a minority of profiteers. They Only Wanted our Good, 1789, anonymous caricature. A noble has his hand kissed by a peasant… before putting the chain around his neck. A bishop gives his blessing… in exchange for a money bag. A magistrate carries out an operation in exchange for money bags.
  2. Equality at the Time of the Revolution : The 3

Orders Before the 1789 Revolution, the nobles and the leaders of the Catholic Church don’t pay taxes. They own land and get their richness from those who are working for them and paying numerous taxes. We Must Hope That This Game Will End Soon: The Campaigning Author, 1789, anonymous caricature. The people is represented by a skinny old man, with ripped clothes. The hoe that he is leaning on shows that he’s a peasant. He bears the weight of the two others. In front of him, there is a member of the Catholic Church. Fat and well nourished, he is recognisable because of his violet clothes and Christian cross. The old man carries on his back a member of the nobility: he is recognisable because of his sword (1) and his clothes: feathered hat (2), white collar (3), fine shoes and ribbons (4)… 2 3 1 4 The papers coming out of their pockets represent the numerous privileges that they benefit from: right to collect taxes, to make peasants work for free etc.
  3. We Must Hope That This Game Will End Soon: The

    Campaigning Author, 1789, anonymous caricature.
  4. Equality at the Time of the Revolution: The 3 Orders

With the 1789 Revolution, the people hope to abolish the privileges. I Knew That I Would Get A Go, 1789, anonymous caricature In the second part of this caricature, it is at present for the nobles and the members of the church to help and to support the people. In the bowls of the scales is written: “Equality and Liberty” and “Relief of the People”.
  5. Equality at the Time of the Revolution: The Storming of

the Bastille 14th July 1789, the people of Paris attack the Bastille, a famous prison that symbolises the power of King Louis XVI. This event marks the beginning of the French Revolution. It is still celebrated today during national day. The Parisians attack the Bastille; they want weapons to protect themselves from the Royal Army who is threatening to intervene. The army cannons risk being fired on the people to maintain the calm. Storming of the Bastille and arrest of the governor M. de Launay, 14th July 1789, anonymous.
  6. Storming of the Bastille and arrest of the governor M.

de Launay, 14th July 1789, anonymous.
  7. Equality at the Time of the Revolution: The Women’s March

5th October 1789, 7000 Parisian women march on Versailles to claim bread and the abolition of privileges. The King gives in under the constraint of this improvised army of women. To Versailles, to Versailles from 5th October 1789, 1789, anonymous print. Women from the bourgeoisie (1) like those from the populous (2) participate in the demonstration. 2 1 1 2 Spikes, sabers and cannons underline the determination of these women, ready to fight.
  8. Equality at the Time of the Revolution: The Storming of

the Tuileries 10th August 1792, the revolutionaries attack the Tuileries Palace and capture King Louis XVI, who will go on to be executed. It is the end of the French monarchy. The Storming of the Tuileries Palace, Carrousel Court, 10th August 1792, 1793, Jacques Bertaux. The Swiss Guards, in red, protect the king. They are attacked by the “Federates”, in blue, who are the soldiers of the Revolution. King Louis XVI and his wife Marie-Antoinette reside in the Tuileries Palace. At the entrance, the colours of France and the Phrygian bonnet of the revolutionaries float in the air.
  9. The Fight for Equality: The Revolution of 1830 Attack on

Paris City Hall, 1831, Joseph Beaume. The artist shows the people taking part in a battle, but also Polytechnic students (1) and the National Guard (2). These soldiers will go on to remain faithful to Louis Philippe. The city hall represents the political power of the city of Paris. In 1830, the Parisians revolt against King Charles X, who wants to bring into question the gains of the 1789 Revolution. This propaganda painting ordered by Louis Philippe, who succeeds from Charles X, stages the people of Paris alongide the officers of the National Guard. 2 1
  10. In 1848, the revolutionaries also fight for social and economic

equality. They refuse to let riches be squandered by a small group. The city hall is the seat of Parisian political power. The people and the barricades represent the 1848 Revolution. Lamartine, a politician, defends the tricolore flag, symbol of a Republic attached to individual and collective liberties (freedom of expression, right to vote, representation of people by the Parliament…) The revolutionaries carry a red flag, symbol of the combat for economic equality and the abolition of private property. Lamartine Pushing Back the Red Flag at the City Hall (1848) Henri Félix Emmanuel PHILIPPOTEAUX, The Fight for Equality: The 1848 Revolution

  12. In 1870, the workers, employees and small craftsmen of Paris

revolt against the assembly, made up of a majority of monarchist members of parliament, and the government. This insurrection reprimanded through violence calls for the end of exploitation of workers by bosses, but also the freedom of women and equal pay for them. Barricade at the cross-section of the Voltaire and Richard-Lenoir Boulevards - Bruno Braquehais. The Fight for Equality: The Commune of Paris Barricade on Vendôme Square at the edge of Castiglione Road - Bruno Braquehais.
  13. Individual charity is not the collective redistributon to which each

and every one contributes based on his means and from which each one benefits based on his needs. The Fight for Equality: the Commune of Paris Charity, 1851, François Bonvin In the centre of the painting, a nun, recognisable because of her headdress, hands out soup to poor people. The cross reminds us of the religious dimension of charity. Amongst the poor people, a woman puts out her hand to ask for charity.
  14. In 1983, following clashes between the police and young immigrants

from the suburbs of Lyon, an antiracist march is organised. Starting from the town of Marseille, it gathers 100,000 people upon its arrival in Paris. The movement is then picked up by the antiracist association “Touche pas à mon pote” (Leave My Buddy Alone).
