2. Various prints (1793-1799) Fraternity is part of the French identity on the same level as Marianne and other republican symbols. The French flag appears around the 1789 Revolution. Blue and red – colours of Parisian people – surround white, the royal colour. The character Marianne symbolises France. She is wearing the Phrygian cap of the 1789 revolutionaries. 6. The 14th July 1790, one year after the storming of the Bastille, the Feast of the Federation celebrates the fraternal reconciliation and the unity of all French people. The civil militia have come from across France Men, women and children… All of the inhabitants of Paris are represented celebrating the union of the nation with enthusiasm. The ceremony take place on the Champ de Mars in paris. A victory arch is built for the occasion. On the altar of the nation, soldiers and militia swear fidelity “to the nation, the law and the king”. In 1848, Lamartine declares “Citizens, let us respectfully preserve the tricolour flag which has been around the world with our liberties and our glories.” The ideas of the French Revolution create a fraternity between the persons who share these values. The town hall is the seat of Parisian political power. The people and the barricades represent the 1848 revolution. Lamartine, a politician, defends the tricolour flag, symbol of a republic attached to collective and individual liberties (freedom of expression, the right to vote, the representation of the people by the parliament…) The revolutionaries carry a red flag, symbol of the combat for economic equality and the abolition of private property. The abolition of slavery (1849), François-Auguste Biard This painting illustrates the contradictions of France in 1848: it shows the abolition of slavery in the name of universal values yet reveals the sentiment of superiority of the people of the colonies. A French member of parliament announces the end of slavery. In his hand, he is holding the abolition decree. The tricolour flag symbolises the French Republic and its values: liberty, equality, fraternity. The freed slaves all seem happy. They are shown kneeling, half-naked and thanking their former owners. The French colonists are upstanding, elegant and calm. They dominate the scene at each side of the painting. The vegetation reminds us that we are on a tropical island. 12. The Toussaint (1888), Émile Friant Charity is a personal or indiviual initiative. Fraternity is a systematic action of mutual assistance that falls into organisations or into collective institutions. A beggar The little girl reaches out with a coin for the beggar.
