    Designing for an
Ever-Evolving User Base Face ID Not Recognized
  2. Let’s pretend the products we design could look back at

the users & designers. What will they see? Back to the begining. *dial tones* TURN THE TABLES 01 THE SETUP
  3. 02 Early Users $ Smaller, more homogenous5 $ Much less

diversity by way of identity (race, ethnicity, age, gender, socioeconomic background, etc).8 $ Isolated to specific parts of the world5 $ Enthusiasts and people who use the digital world for work.

 are

online. (63% of the world’s population) That’s a 17% increase since 2019, with 782 million more people logging on. 03

reach! 7 Huge variations in identity, experience, background, user needs, & tech knowledge. Modern Designers 7 Just like the user group, the design field has grown and diversified - but not at the same rate! 7 This creates a gap between designers and users. https://goremotely.net/blog/technology-industry-stats/
  9. No one designer can anticipate, understand and meet the

needs of all users. 06 WHY IS THIS GAP A PROBLEM? THE GAP (OMINOUS)
  10. ! No one designer can anticipate, understand and meet the

needs of all users& ! There are limits to design empathy. 06 WHY IS THIS GAP A PROBLEM? THE GAP (OMINOUS)

needs of all usersB 7 There are limits to design empathyB 7 When we don’t know, we leave room for assumptions - some of which can be harmful, especially when we don’t realize we’re making them. 06 WHY IS THIS GAP A PROBLEM? THE GAP (OMINOUS)

needs of all usersA 6 There are limits to design empathyA 6 When we don’t know, we leave room for assumptions - some of which can harmful, especially when we don’t realize we’re making themA 6 Our assumptions can be biased or contain blindspots, which then isolate or exclude users. 06 WHY IS THIS GAP A PROBLEM? THE GAP (OMINOUS)
  13. 07 THE BIG QUESTION So, how do we bridge this

gap? Sounds like a problem, right?
  14. Ask questions, seek feedback, & listen more than you speak.

09 The more people & perspectives, the less likely you are to miss something. 02 THE TOOLS
  15. whenever you can. Learn 11 Explore your own biases and

assumptions, and about overarching topics like the digital divide and accessibility. 04 THE TOOLS
  16. 12 It’s our job to design an
 inclusive digital

world. Let’s meet users where they are. OUR JOB
