    An institutional
    commitment to
    data preservation
    –––

    Data archives for
    each major
    research area
    • Earth Science Data - Major facilities at NASA's
    Distributed Active Archive Centers (DAACs)
    located throughout the United States

    • Space Science Data - Helio, planetary, and
    astronomical data.

    • Research publications - online database of over
16 million astronomy and physics papers.

    Making data
    FAIR*
    • Findable - consistent and persistent descriptions
make scientific data easy to find by both humans
    and computers

    • Accessible - use of standard, open protocols
ensure data and metadata can be accessed by all.

    • Interoperable - formal, accessible, and widely
adopted semantics and vocabularies are used to
expand data usability across systems and
    communities.

    • Reusable - data are richly described according to
standards to ensure they can be combined or
replicated, and usage rights are clarified

    Data requires
    (open) tools to
    have value
    • Core libraries – funded by the creators of the
    data.

    • Community libraries – sponsored by NASA, but
    also significant volunteer contributions.
Communities building the tools they need.

    • Detailed tutorials – demonstrating how to solve
    common problems.

    • Open licenses – to maximise reuse (both data
    and software).
