2. Her hand, soft but strong, often blistered but now cleared of any marks. The café is bustling – with smells of cappuccinos and croissants and a sea of laughs and old American rock - and but here we are, looking closely at the creases that are lit up by the cloud-covered Danish sun. I see similar light reflecting on her ear and decide to see if I can capture that, but after a few min- utes people start looking at us weirdly and Kate tells me to stop. There’s a concept in psychology called the Third. It’s the idea that, though we like to think of ourselves as separate individuals who are doing things to other people and having things done to us, instead, two people actually come togeth- er and form a new thing - a third space that is separate from either of them. Essentially, it’s a way of thinking about relationships as their own entities. I began this photo project as an exploration of that potential relationship entity - the third space - in my relationship with my dear friend, Kate. In photos of her body parts, her clothes, her retainer, her feet in her bed and more, I strive to give the viewer a glance into the inti- mate friendship that we have. Paired with pic- tures of adventures we’ve gone on together, silly moments, and more subtle ones, I hope to build out this body to more accurately reflect the paths we’ve taken together and the many more to come.
