  1. LAO  PDR  SITUATION  OVERVIEW   UNICEF  reports  that  44%  of

     children  in  Lao  PDR  experience  physical   punishment  and  70%  experience  psychological  aggression    while  178,000   children  in  Laos  are  considered  to  be  engaged  in  various  forms  of  child  labour                FI  Laos  reaches  more  than  2,000  vulnerable  children,  youth   and  their  families  per  year  ;  we  estimate  that  there  are  around  200  children  &   youth  working  and  living  on  the  streets  of  Vientiane  Capital  &  Vientiane  Province     According  to  the  FI  Laos    Street  Children  Profile   Ø  69%  of  street  children  were  identified  as  having  a  living  condition  as  not  good.   Ø  Drugs  and  alcohol  abuse  in  the  family  were  involved  and  reported  in  19%  of  all   cases.   Ø  Lao  street  children  also  come  to  work/live  on  the  streets  because  of  family   problems  and/or  domestic  violence,  with  7%  reporting  experience  of  physical   abuse.   Ø  9%  of  street  children  have  no  reported  home  or  guardian  care.  
  2. FI  LAOS  CHILD  ABUSE  REPORT  2014   In  2014  Peuan

     Mit  received  47  reports  on  child  abuse   (51%  males,  49%  females)   62%  reported  violence   11%  reported  sexual  abuse   15%  reported  neglect   6%  reported  accidents   1  case  of  trafficking   2  cases  where  parents  forced  the  child  to  work  on  the  streets

     –  receives  phone  calls                     7  days  a  week,  24/7     DIRECTORY  OF  SERVICES  -­‐  user-­‐friendly  directory  of   services  aimed  directly  at  ChildSafe  members  providing   easy  access  to  the  names  and  numbers  of  support  services   they  may  need  during  emergencies/or  when  supporting   abuse  victims      
  4. OUR  RESPONSE  –  DROP  IN  CENTER     Drop  in

     Center  is  open  Mon-­‐Fri  from  8am  to  5pm,  providing   food,  health  services,  place  to  rest,  counseling,  sports  &  games,   like  skills  education  &  non-­‐formal  education  classes  for   vulnerable  children  &  young  people     In  2014  194  children  visited  the  center    
  5. OUR  RESPONSE  –  REINTEGRATION            

                                                             Transitional  Home  &  Dormitory  accommodate  and   provide  children  who  cannot  stay  in  family  environment  with  medical   care,  nutritious  meals,  counselling  and  access  to  education  or  training,   including  daily  school  transportation.  The  main  objective  is  to  support   the  children  towards  their  reintegration  into  school  or  educational   setting  and  with  their  family  or  a  guardian  family  home.       During  their  stay,  children  and  young  people  are  able  to  regain  their   mental  and  physical  health  and  start  building  their  future  away  from   street  life,  exploitation  or  abuse  -­‐  towards  exciting  development   opportunities.       In  2014  107  were  provided  with  safe  lodging      
  6. OUR  RESPONSE  -­‐  CHILDSAFE  NETWORK   The  ChildSafe  Network  is

     global  child  protection  network  that  involves   members  of  all  tiers  of  society  and  the  community  to  protect  children   from  all  forms  of  abuse.     Mission:  Together,  we  protect  marginalized  urban  children  and  youth   and,  with  them,  create  innovative  and  exciting  opportunities  to  build   their  futures.     Overview:  The  ChildSafe  Network  builds  a  protective  environment  for   children,  including  street  children,  to  safeguard  them  from  abusive   situations.  It  directly  involves  the  local  and  international  community  –   including  traditional  and  non-­‐traditional  duty  bearers  such  as  teachers,   local  authorities,  businesses,  families  and  key  community  leaders,  as   well  as  travelers.    
  7. CHILDSAFE  NETWORK  IN  LAO  PDR          

            FI  LAOS  trains  key  people  in  communities  to  keep  their  eyes  wide  open,   recognize  situations  when  children  might  be  at  risk  and  to  know  how  to   respond.   Ø 39  representatives  from  different  local  CSOs,  Lao  Women’s  Union  and  the   Lao  Youth  Union  have  been  trained  as  ChildSafe  Trainers   Ø There  are  now  around  350  certified  ChildSafe  member  in  Laos  who  trained   to  identify  and  prevent  abuse  against  children  and  who  know  how  to  take   action     Only  in  2014  these  members  have  reached  over  2500  people  in  communities   through  awareness  raising  sessions  on  child  rights  targeting  teachers,   authorities,  parents  and  children  &  youth    
  8. EXPANDING  THE  CHILDSAFE   NETWORK   CURRENT  MEMBERS:   • 

    Children  &  Youth   •  Government  /  village  chiefs/  local  authorities   •  Teachers  and  school  administrators   NEW  MEMBERS:     •  Local  tour  operators   •  Tuk  tuks  and  taxis   •  Hotels  and  Guesthouses   •  Restaurants  and  cafes

      •  It  is  not  new  in  the   program  therefore  Peuan   Mit  staffs  are  aware  of.   •  Beneficiary  participated   and  report.   •  Counterpart  government,   NGO  willing  to  learn  and   exchange  from  us.  
  10. Challenge   •  It  is  not  every  organization  or  government

      (especially  police)    has,  understand  and  take   action  on  this  issue.   •  lack  of  service  provider  in  Laos,  Peuan  Mit   has  to  take  action  and  respond  to  all  kind  of   cases.   •   Peuan  Mit  doesn't  have    the  professional  of     all  area  therefore  has  to  provide  best  need  to   the  child.
