Information and advice for students in Computer Science at the University of Manchester who are starting a year long industrial placement in 2021.

  2. Tell us where you’re going! • MyPlacement studentmobility.manchester.ac.uk – Work

    experiences > Computer Science > COMP: Industrial Experience > Apply Now > COMP: Placement details (form) – Name of employer – Your job title – Your location – Start and end dates – Manager or contact name (e.g. H.R. name)
  3. Student Loans & Fees • Make sure that the Student

    Loan Company & student finance are fully aware you are on placement • If you are not sure about the form ask Student Services
  4. Registration • You must register on-line – available during the

    August / September – Allows e.g. letter confirming your registration for things like Council Tax Exemption – Get a national insurance no. gov.uk/apply-national-insurance-number • To obtain Student Rates for London travel (Oyster cards) etc, you can send the form for signature to Mabel • As a registered student of the university you have access to all university functions during your placement year that you had during previous years
  5. Assessed Deliverables When What Who June to September 2021 Initial

    report (confirm location & manager) student January to May 2022 Placement interview (usually videoconference) Student, manager and academic (usually Duncan) September 2022 (via Blackboard) Placement report Student (with managers comments)
  6. Updating contact information • It is your responsibility to ensure

    that we always have your current contact details so – Once you have a desk, a computer and an email address – Email [email protected] • Your current work location address including postcode and telephone number • Your placement managers name and telephone number • If you move your work location and/or manager at any time during your placement you must notify us
  7. Tutor Visits / Telecon contact • You will be visited

    either – by Duncan or – by another academic in the school, possibly your own second year tutor • It is important that you make yourself available for that visit: we ask – Summary of your work – What Went Well (WWW) – Even Better If (EBI) – Template at cdyf.me/surviving.html

    times using your UNIVERSITY EMAIL ADDRESS • You are responsible for reading your university emails whilst out on placement • The fact that you are on placement will not be accepted if you miss important information from the University, you are still a University student. • SCS will do their best to contact you through all addressess contact points we have for you
  10. MyPlacement • MyPlacement site will be available to all ‘wIE’

    students on placement http://studentmobility.manchester.ac.uk/ • The site will have access to all report forms and information • We would also appreciate your help for students looking for placements, occasionally we may contact you asking you to help by giving a student some information about your company
  11. More than one job • Your first job was hard

    to get • Extending your placement? – E.g. CERN etc • Summer internship after IE? • Tell us about stuff for the Waggle
