  1. Scripture. Culture. Experience. “Converts to theism are disproportionately made up

of those with a master's degree or above… whereas converts to atheism are disproportionately made up of those with no academic qualifications.” (source: Guardian Newspaper)
  2. Scripture. Culture. Experience. “I don‟t believe in God because there

is absolutely no scientific evidence for his existence and from what I‟ve heard the very definition is a logical impossibility in this known universe.” Ricky Gervais (Comedian)
  3. Scripture. Culture. Experience. “Narnia represents everything that is most hateful

about religion… This Christ-lion willingly lays down his life… Of all the elements of Christianity, the most repugnant is the notion of the Christ who took our sins upon himself and sacrificed his body in agony to save our souls. Did we ask him to?” Polly Toynbee (Guardian Columnist)
  4. Scripture. Culture. Experience. “I do not subscribe to the view

that religion should somehow be tolerated but not encouraged in public life – that you can ask people to leave their faith at the door… [churches] have been Britain‟s conscience on issues from debt cancellation to child poverty, to the good stewardship of the Earth.” Gordon Brown (Prime Minister, 2007-2010)
  5. Scripture. Culture. Experience. “ - A non-believer tries to convince

a believer that God does not exist. He puts a kettle on so as to brighten up their discussion with a cup of tea. - „I‟m telling you, there‟s no such a thing as a God. Neither the universe nor anything in it was created. There was just a bang! And that was it. All done!' - „Hum‟, replies the believer. - „...but hang on a second, the kettle„s boiling and the tea won‟t get made by itself!‟, shouts the non-believer, rushing to the kitchen.” Frank Skinner (Comedian)
  6. Scripture. Culture. Experience. “Human nature contains a streak of fear,

greed, selfishness and territorialism that must result in a mean level of dissent and bloodshed, with or without the excuse of religious difference. Without religion, human life is no longer sacred – nothing is – so it's not „logical‟ to believe we'd be gentler if it disappeared... I believe in God.” Victoria Coren (Guardian Columnist)
  7. Scripture. Culture. Experience. Light “…your word is a lamp to

my feet and a light to my path…” Voice “…obey the LORD your God and keep his commands and decrees that are written in this Book of the Law…” Power “…God said „let there be light‟ and there was light…” Breath “…all scripture is God-breathed..”
  8. Scripture. Culture. Experience. “Defend the Bible? Would you defend a

lion? Loose him; and let him go!” CH Spurgeon

  11. Top tips on leading a group • Some tops tips

in leading a group… • Be warm and welcoming, take time to chat and catch up or get to know each other • Know the material; take time to have studied it, worshipped Jesus for yourself and be familiar with the passage • Don‟t worry if you don‟t know the answer to everything, be honest, offer to go away and find the answer! • Keep the discussion on the passage and collect up extra questions, tangents for the end of the study – this can be done firm and gently by saying “brilliant question, can we look at that later”
  12. Top tips on leading a group • Be ready to

listen and learn yourself as your hear insights from your friend • Be prepared to leave loose ends, you don‟t need the correct answer to everything and ask open question eg questions that don‟t have yes or no as the answer • Be ok with silence, don‟t feel like you have to jump in with the answer • In preparation, try and anticipate possible questions and misunderstandings • Encourage answers, by being ok with silence, smiling, don‟t feel like you have to correct every answer, you can ask questions like… lets look at what the passage says, that‟s great what does everyone else think
  13. Inviting your friends • Discuss in your groups who could

you ask to do a Seeker study and how are you going to ask them? • Take time to pray for your friends, maybe agree to pray for each other and your friends every day for the next term
