  1. excuse 勹 bound up + 日 key + 儿 human

legs This is the kanji used in gomen nasai, the phrase you use to excuse yourself when you do something rude, like stepping on someone’s foot. And what’s your excuse? You were kidnapped and bound up tightly all day, lying on your side, so now your human legs are asleep. Do you think your kidnapper will forgive you if you say you’re sorry?
  2. exertion 免 excuse + 力 power (Most common in 勉強,

‘study’.) I think that studying is nothing but pointless exertion, but my parents demand that I put all my power into it. They won’t take any excuses.
  3. bird 白 white + 一 one + tail feathers What

kind of bird is that? Instead of a normal tail, it has just one white tail feather.
  4. long Picture the first five strokes as long hair; the

bottom three strokes should be familiar from 食 eat. If you have very long hair, it always gets in your food when eating.
  5. horse 長 long + tail feathers A pictograph: the first

five lines show the horse’s neck and long mane. But where’s the tail? I’ve seen horses with feathered wings, but I’ve never seen a horse with tail feathers.
  6. station 馬 horse + 尺 ruler People used to go

to the station to catch a horse, but these days we have railroads. (‘R’ for ‘railroad’ and ruler.)
  7. verification They say you shouldn’t look a gift horse in

the mouth, but this person is obsessed with verifying that all his horses are strong and healthy. He even makes his inspections in bad weather, carrying an umbrella and checking the horses’ mouths one by one. 馬 horse + umbrella + 一 one + 口 mouth + 人 person
