  1. sword A simple picture of the curved handle of a

    sword. As a kanji element, we will call it dagger (vs. the longer saber – see next element.)
  2. saber * When 刀 sword (dagger) appears as a right-hand

    element, it is stretched out and simplified. Think of this element as a long saber, in contrast with the shorter dagger.
  3. cut 七 seven + 刀 sword The seven samurai used

    their swords to cut their enemies.
  4. separate 口 mouth + 勹 bound up +刂 saber A

    prisoner with his mouth bound up, hoping that the saber beside him will not be used to separate his head from his body.
  5. street See it as a T-intersection, or a street sign

    on a pole. As an element, we will also use it to mean a nail or spike, with a large flat head.
  6. town 田 rice field + 丁 street A small town

    with nothing but rice fields and streets.
  7. can 丁 street + 口 mouth A mouth standing on

    the street corner, asking for things. “Can you give me directions? Can I have some money?” You can put nails in your mouth, but that doesn’t mean you should.
  8. child A picture of a baby, a very young child:

    the head on top, the feet wrapped up in a blanket, and the arms outstretched for its mother.
  9. like 女 woman + 子 child The thing that that

    woman likes most is her child.
