  1. KIT, SWAT & INVESTIGO: Probably the most comprehensive methods that

encompass tape media data destruction, recycling, and tape disposal in the industry! Presented by Paul Box of Insurgo Media Services Insurgo www.insurgo.co.uk +44 (0)1495 372 000
  2. An introduction to Insurgo Media Services Threats and Research Industry

Developments High-Security Tape Disposal (KIT and SWAT) Traceability
  3. Our team has collectively over 200 years of combined tape

media experience From a manufacturing heritage, sales and support
  4. With the developments and advance in tape technology, we ask

whether these traditional disposal methods are entirely effective?
  5. Degaussing • Fantastic method to quickly destroy the tape data

    - when done correctly • OE measurement needs to be double the strength of the tapes • Older equipment was NSA approved, but are unlikely to have the strength to destroy modern tape • They need regular servicing • Degaussers output a lot of heat, causing them to cut-out and require a cool-off period. • Heat in BaFe chemical structure causes stronger coercivity • It’s impossible to know what force has hit the tape and whether it has been erased completely • There is no way of measuring or testing the accuracy of the process • Recommend that each tape is tested afterwards • It doesn’t impact or erase the memory chip of modern tapes – Microwave frequency needed • Anyone can use a plug
  6. Shredding • Doesn’t actually erase or remove the data from

the tapes - it just breaks up the physical tape • Time consuming process for small shred particles • Noise pollution, loud operation for on-site usage • Will always need to be paired with an additional tape disposal method • Impossible to control all the particles of tape • Tape remnants get caught in the shredding equipment • Tape strands produced will include variations of cut size requested • Creates microplastics • Data can be recovered from the strands of tape
  7. Information that we have extracted from a shredded heap of

degaussed tape in under 5 seconds: • Backup software used • Company name • Barcode Label number • Partition details and information • Drive serial number last used • Server name • Backup Pool information More than enough information to mount an attack on a company!

  9. Incineration • 800 degrees - good solution in achieving ‘nothingness’

    • Uncontrolled processes and lack of traceability • Cold spots inside incinerators • Commodity code issues – burning of incorrect mediums – lead to fines • The business operations of a plant are not focused on protecting data • Plastic quotas – increasing the time frames • Environmental impact
  10. Tested at the International recognized test laboratory by Director of

the Information Security Research Group at University of South Wales, Professor Andrew Blyth
  11. Verified to security Level 5 - Government-sponsored organisations using advanced

techniques to employ all types of software and hardware attacks with unlimited time and resources to recover sanitised data
  12. Used by many end user organisations including the ECMWF, Met

Office, and Cardiff University. Our partners include Iron Mountain, Crown Records Management and Procurri
  13. KIT - Kills Information on Tape • Proven and verified

tape media data disposal • 100% Secure • No chance of data recovery • Update the CM chip and records within Investigo software each step of the process • Full length of the tape spun every time – all generations • 100% Environmentally friendly • The only solution in the industry that guarantees no traces of data can be found/recovered • No damage to the tape, or servo tracks, re-energises it and allows it to be reused. • Can redeploy back into the business and reduce destruction costs. • Effective up to LT08 today and LTO9 under development
  14. Data, CM Chip, and Servo Tracks Totally Destroyed S.W.A.T. ™

Kills all Data and destroys all Servo Tracks SWAT LTO
  15. S.W.A.T. ™ Kills all Data and destroys all Servo Tracks

Data, CM Chip, and Servo Tracks Totally Destroyed SWAT 3592
  16. SWAT - Securely Wipes All Tracks • Total data destruction

    • Fully tracked process to include controlled Chip writing to key areas • Renders the tape completely useless – But keeps it whole to allow recycling • All data removed from the entirety of the tape • Completely destroys the tape • Lowest energy process • Fixed Earth magnets - No Cooling required
  17. Providing a full detailed, and traceable report listing every tape

that has successfully completed the erasure process
  18. Library software used to finish the tape is linked to

Investigo for automated checks, eliminating any human error aspects
  19. Fin
