The Things That Streams Are Made Of

Punning from a song by The Human League, this was a presentation delivered at an internal staff development session on new video streaming services that our library has subscribed to (whether in full or by PDA). It also discusses the growth of streaming in non-educational settings and how streaming has become so prevalent in education, as well as the affordances streaming gives users and librarians.

    1969) – “a group of vision-competencies a human being can develop by seeing and at the same time having and integrating other sensory experiences”  ACRL (2001) – “determine which materials he/she needs and how to find, access, interpret, analyse and use them both effectively and ethically”  SCONUL (2011) – visual literacy as a core component of information literacy  Benfield (2009) – “high usage activities involve multimedia use, particularly listening to audio and watching video”  Holland (2014) – “digital native students are already fluent in using these technologies, and academic staff themselves expect to make greater use of video in class”

  6. WHY ARE WE STILL BUYING DVDS?  Some of our

    suppliers are still DVD only (no streaming options)  Not all films and television are available for streaming (or free at POD)  Reliability issues of streaming in class  Better quality for showing films  Streaming films isn’t necessarily easier than watching DVDs  DVDs can be kept permanently – not the case for streaming?
  7. THE AFFORDANCES OF STREAMING  Students can watch films anytime,

    anywhere on any device  Repeat viewings – easy to go back to what you missed/need to check  Frees up lecture and seminar time – discuss rather than watch  Concurrent usage allowed  Films are shareable and customisable (e.g. clips)  New devices have no DVD playback  No worries about damage/loss
