    raw data
Data Product Data as a Service (DaaS)
Often data products act as feed for DaaS
    A “commodity” is defined
    as something useful that
    can be turned to
    commercial or other
    advantage. Examples of
    traditional commodities
    are grains, gold, beef, oil
    and natural gas

    Why the big fuss about
    data as a service instead
    of just sticking with data
    products?

We are bit by bit moving
    towards Data as a Service
    (Daas) world. Why?
    Data as a commodity
    follows the same
    servitization trend we see
    elsewhere as well.
    Thus I am more interested
    about DaaS than more or
less static, rigid take it or
    leave it Data Products.
    Future and profit are in
    DaaS

Data as a Product Data as a Service
    • Often a snapshot
    • Often data content is large (relative
    term)
    • As an extreme this is a file
    • Content is often fixed
    • Less refined - less directly usable
    value for customer
    • Used as feed for Data as a Service
    • Might often have One time payment
    pricing
    • Often small batch but timely fresh
    • Currently often GUI driven, but
    APIs offer machine-level access as
    well
    • Customer involved in package
    content and value creation
    • Returned result might come from
    an analysis
    • More often subscription based
    pricing
    Product – Service difference
You can serve both of these
    and all the variations
    Internally, to partners and
    publicly

    Tool to evaluate data commodity
Which are you paying for? Access or
to own the content related rights?
Let’s have a look at the range sliders used to see whether data commodity
has more product or service features.
Data Product Data as a Service
Who controls the usage? Sets the
    SLA and quality levels?
    How much can the consumer
    customize the results / content?
    Who is doing the value-adding
    operations to the data?

Example: Current CO2 levels of a building
Customer gets the current values via
    API. Reselling rights only
API access, current CO2 values only, no history, no batch data. License allows reselling,
but does not give ownership in the data.
Data Product Data as a Service
    Corporate is managing the access
    and stores the data. Corporate
    controls the usage.
    Customer has very little
    customization options
Company has exposed the subset of
    data. Company has sanitized and
    harmonized the data.

Data Product Data as a Service
    Customer controls the derivate data

    data.

    Delivery method can vary.
Download access, simple PDF document, rights to use the document freely. Customer gets the

Evaluate any data market place offering. Would it fit my data
    commodity?
As investor evaluate company’s data commodity portfolio to see
    whether distribution is desired
If your organisation’s data processing capability is low, you should
stick with Data as a Service. Tool to filter.
Understand the role of both in value chains. Undertand your
