"With a Little Help from Our Friends:" Input Needed on MetaMetrics' Vocabulary Research

"With a Little Help from Our Friends:" Input Needed on MetaMetrics' Vocabulary Research

Hosted by MetaMetrics on March 11, 2015, this Roundtable Discussion (RTD) features special guest Michael Graves and discusses vocabulary knowledge essentialness to students' reading proficiency. Learn how word lists—the vocabulary of core reading programs, the vocabulary of content area texts, general academic vocabulary, domain-specific vocabulary, etc.—can help teachers, schools, districts, and/or states select words for instruction. This presentation also explores how various tools and resources from MetaMetrics can assist with the teaching of vocabulary. RTD attendees were encouraged to offer feedback on the utility of these various lists and tools and help guide the next steps of this line of research.

RTD Presenters:
- Michael Graves, Professor Emeritus of Literacy Education at University of Minnesota & Reading Hall of Fame Member
- Jeff Elmore, Senior Research Engineer, MetaMetrics

Having  a  substanHal  vocabulary  is  criHcally  important   to  success  in  reading,  success  in  school  generally,  and   success  in  the  world  beyond  school.   Achieving  students  build  vocabularies  of  something  like   50,000  words  by  the  Hme  they  graduate  from  high   school.   Other  students,  including  students  who  struggle  with   reading  and  many  English  language  learners,  have   much  smaller  vocabularies.   Both  students  with  larger  vocabularies  and  those  with   smaller  vocabularies  need  help  in  building  their   vocabularies.   5   Beginning  Premises

Clearly,  teachers  cannot  teach  anything  like  50,000   words.   The  central  problem  MetaMetrics  is  invesHgaHng  in  its   current  work  on  vocabulary  is  how  to  help  teachers,   schools,  and  districts  select  the  relaHvely  small  number   of  words  to  actually  teach  from  the  50,000  words  that   might  be  taught.   Our  approach  is  to  idenHfy  a  set  of  common  words  that   most  students  are  likely  to  know  and  then  idenHfy   somewhat  less  common  but  sHll  fairly  frequent  words   as  candidates  for  instrucHon.       6   Iden;fying  Words  To  Teach

We  have  idenHfied  the  most  frequent  ~4,000  English   words  and  are  considering  designaHng  those  as  words   that  most  students  know  or  can  learn  on  their  own.   We  have  idenHfied  the  words  occurring  in  four  current,   widely  used  core  reading  programs.   We  have  idenHfied  the  words  occurring  in  four  current,   widely  used  elementary  social  studies,  science,  and  math   programs.   We  are  in  the  process  of  idenHfying  the  words  occurring   in  four  current,  widely  used  middle  school  social  studies,   science,  and  math  programs,  as  well  as  those  that  occur   in  high  school  programs  in  these  same  content  areas.       7   Word  Lists  We  Are  Currently  Working  With

General  Academic  Vocabulary  consists  of  words  that   are  not  among  the  most  common  words,  that  are  more   frequent  in  informaHonal  materials  than  in  ficHon,  and   that  occur  in  a  number  of  content  areas  rather  than   being  concentrated  in  one  or  two  content  areas.   Words  like  concept,  alternaBve,  license,  paradigm,  and   invoke  are  examples  of  General  Academic  Vocabulary.   We  would  create  different  lists  for  different  grade   ranges,  probably  for  K-‐2,  3-‐5,  6-‐8,  and  9-‐12.       8   Another  Type  of  List  We  Plan  to  Create:  Lists  of   General  Academic  Vocabulary

Domain-‐Specific  Academic  Vocabulary  consists  of   words  that  are  not  among  the  most  common  words   and  that  are  unique  to  specific  academic  disciplines.   Examples  include  numeral  (math),  conservaBon  of   maLer  (sciences),  agricultural  economy  (history),   interstate  commerce  (civics),  and  pathogen  (health).     Again  we  would  create  different  lists  for  different  grade   ranges,  probably  for  K-‐2,  3-‐5,  6-‐8,  and  9-‐12.       9   One  More  Type  of  List  We  Plan  to  Create:  Lists   of  Domain-‐Specific  Academic  Vocabulary
