  1. RubyKaigi 2026 is VERY SOON!!! (I made these slides for

TokyoRubyistMeetup Show and Tell so they’re a bit slapdash. I’m including my speaker notes in the slides!)
  2. What is Ruby Box? Ruby box is a new experimental

feature released in Ruby 4.0 It is about isolating the code that’s running, could be useful for separating monkey patches, allowing multiple versions of gems, etc.
  3. What is JRuby? Typically our Ruby code is interpreted by

CRuby but JRuby compiles it to JVM Bytecode. This allows Java shops to write in Ruby, and can take advantages of any improvements happening with the JVM (which is much used.)
  4. Themes to study for better understanding (maybe) - Garbage Collection

    - PicoRuby - Compiling - & Optimization - Why are some languages faster than others? - Why is it said that Ruby is slow? There are a few talks that seem to talk about Garbage collection (I haven’t thought about GC since university) I don’t know anything about PicoRuby! But there are a few talks! Compiling & Optimization - the usual number of talks regarding how to parse the code we write into something the machine can understand And also few talks on ZJIT. I think there are quite a few talks around optimization and different things we can do to speed things up, so it might be worth learning what are the usual strategies to speed up code compilation and execution.
  5. There are too many good talks I can’t choose!! -

This will help you choose with a clear head - Make a schedule in advance so you feel less pressured on the day! - Disclaimer, I didn’t make this. If you look at the schedule and think “how can I possible decide there are so many good choices!”
  6. Btw, I’m especially looking forward to these talks (Not that

I’m not looking forward to all the talks!!!! Good Luck Speakers!!!)
  7. Most are already full - Join the waitlist - But

some still have space! LIKE THE MORNING EXERCISE EVENTS. - But one of them is also fully booked I really admire that sort of strength - And some don’t require registration! (Illumination, Morning Tram) - Anyway you can also just ask people ot hang out with you Rubyists are nice it’ll work out :D
  8. Tourist-y Things - Night view from Mt Hakodate one of

the top three in the world! - Fort Goryokaku - star shaped citadel! Lots of Sakura! Full bloom is expected 20-24 April! - Yunokawa Onsen - one of Hokkaido’s top onsen! - Hakodate Morning market - you can even eat crab! - Lucky Pierrot is a Hakodate only chain each store is decorated different their Chinese Chicken Burger won Japan’s best local burger one year! While you’re in Hakodate, if you want to travel Hokkaido foreign passport holders can purchase a JR Hokkaido Pass so you can save money on traveling in Hokkaido!
  9. Local Specialities (Meibutsu) (for Hakodate and Hokkaido) - Hasegawa store

Yakitori Bentou that is actually pork (it’s really really good) - Ikameshi - rice cooked in the squid - Hakodate Shio Ramen - Dairy-products like cheese, button and icecream. If you ever look at meibutsu and think “is this gonna be good”, I tell you what my friend told me, when I was wondering if I should try softserve with shirasu topping in Enoshima, “Michelle, if it was good you would be able to buy it in Tokyo”
  10. Hakodate and Conan - Hakodate was the setting for the

2024 Detective Conan movie, “The million-dollar pentagram” - Highest grossing film*so far. - The movie features lots of tourist attractions! *Highest grossing film so far of the franchise (29 movies) if we only consider japanese box office revenue
