I think that the biggest constraint for open source it's time from maintainers, developers and everyone else involved. The best tool we have to solve big and complicated problems, for a long period of time is collaboration. A healthy community it's the best way to promote collaboration.

Please consider helping an abandoned open source project, however you can. You are part of the community, and the future of open source and the software industry is the community.
