  1. Functionalism Main principles : ❖ Organic analogy ❖ Collective consciousness

❖ Value consensus ❖ Social solidarity Main sociologists : ➢ Durkheim ➢ Parsons ➢ Murdock Murdock 1949 – did a study and found that in all 250 societies he studied family featured in all of them. Therefore he concluded that family is universal. Murdock has four functions of the family 1. Reproduction 2. Sexuality 3. Economic 4. Socialisation Favour nuclear family
  2. Functionalism & Family Parsons believed that the family provides two

major functions: o Primary socialisation o Stimulation of adult personalities “old fashioned” “See family through rose tinted glasses” – Too positive Family could be oppressive Does not look at family diversity – they perform the same functions as nuclear family Criticism of functionalism and family
  3. A Conflict theory Main principles : ▪ Class conflict ▪

Dominant ideology ▪ Suppression of working class ▪ False class consciousness Nuclear family has not always existed. It happened after relationships went from being polygamous to monogamous, this was after private property was developed and people would leave their money in their family. this keeps the rich, rich and poor, poor! “Heirs” Women are unpaid workers, family teaches the children capitalist ideology. Making them accept inequality.
  4. “Feminists believe that the family oppresses women” “Gender inequality is

created by society” Marxist feminists believe oppressions is caused by men and the capitalist society. Benson – women are unpaid for great deal of work, to pay women for this would mean there would be a redistribution of wealth “WOMEN ARE THE TAKERS OF SHIT” – Fran Ansley Radical feminists believe that family allows women to be in unpaid domestic labour and sexually services Biggest impact in tackling sex discrimination, gradually becoming overcome e.g. sex discrimination act Black feminists believe feminism ignores ethnicity. They believe they have different experiences. Black women more likely to be single parents. Asian women more likely to experience arranged/forced marriage
