How to create iconic designs?

I gave a presentation for the 2014 graduation class of Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology on how to become a better designer. The idea was to teach by example and show how products become iconic, designers famous and what to avoid or do to get there.

  2. The aim of the new design was to create a

    neutral typeface that had great clarity, no intrinsic meaning in its form, and could be used on a wide variety of signage.
  3. In 1960, the typeface's name was changed to Helvetica (meaning

    Swiss in Latin) in order to make it more marketable internationally.
  4. He began studying industrial design in Ulm, Germany, but after

    a year was dismissed by the examination board, because his talent was doubted.

    free while attending social functions, designed a double-chain shoulder strap, something common in downmarket products, but rare in luxury circles at the time.

    outfits like the Pennsylvania Railroad company
  8. In an extensive partnership with Coca-Cola, Loewy was responsible for

    a significant redesign of the iconic glass bottle, though his most original work came when designing vending, soda, and ice dispensing machines
  9. Royal Dutch Shell company has always been represented by the

    image of a seashell, but it wasn’t until 1971 that its logo took on the more geometric form by which it is known around the world today.
  10. Lagerfeld owns a red point Birman cat named Choupette, which,

    on 1 June 2013, he indicated he would marry, were it legal.
  11. You know that what you need to do is possible

    to do, even though difficult, and sense of time disappears. You forget yourself. You feel part of something larger.
