  1. Longsight Group   Sakai Commercial Affiliate   Hosting, Custom Development,

Support and Training for Sakai   www.longsight.com   We also do: Drupal, DSpace, CAS, portfolios, etc.
  2. Traditional Course Evaluation   At the end of term, Universities

and Colleges need to evaluate instructors and courses   Paper surveys distributed in class, 5-10 minutes class time used, student collects paper surveys, delivers to Office by hand   Scantron? Tabulated, perhaps is shared with students, perhaps faculty see it….eventually.   Wouldn’t it be nice if we could do this electronically?
  3. Online Evaluations   Many proprietary systems, companies. You can purchase

a product to do online evaluations.   But what you really need is the data on courses, enrollments and instructors. Student Information Systems have this, the Learning Management System already has this data!   Wouldn’t it be nice if we could just have the online evaluations in Sakai where the courses and the data already are?
  4. Sakai Evaluation System   Truly collaborative software development project: 

Participants: Virginia Tech; University of Cambridge; Columbia University; University of Oxford; University of Maryland; University of Michigan; University of California, Berkley; Tufts University; University of Cape Town; Longsight; Unicon   And those are just the active contributors, many more institutions are using it! But we always need more help.   Currently version is 1.4. Version 1.5 will probably be released soon.
  5. Sakai Evaluation System   Uses Sakai courses, enrollments, instructor data

to allow authorized users to create templates and evaluations.   Students then complete the evaluations online in Sakai.   Sakai generates basic reports online, PDF, Excel, CSV
  6. A Note About “Hierarchy”   Most institutions have an organizational

hierarchy: Schools, Depts   Ex: School of Law, Biology Dept, Business School   Sakai does not know about this hierarchy – all courses are on the same “level”.   Perhaps you want to evaluate all Science classes with one evaluation?   First you have to tell Sakai what classes are Science classes.   So this requires some setup!
  7. Limitations   Hierarchy requires some setup   Reporting tools are

very basic (although you can always get the data from the database if you need to)   Different institutions have different preferences for Email Notifications   You may find some bugs!
  8. You can get involved!   Test it out for yourself:
