Screen Time Limits by Age in 2026: A Parent's Guide to Healthy Screen Habits

Ask five different parents about screen time limits by age and you’ll get five different numbers, most of them pulled from a chart they half-remember from a pediatrician’s waiting room years ago. The truth is messier and, honestly, more useful: the guidance itself has changed. If you’re still hunting for one clean hour-count to enforce at every age, the honest answer is that it doesn’t quite exist anymore — and understanding why will make you far less anxious about the whole thing.

  2. What actually changed THEN NOW 2 hours a day What

& instead of what One fixed clock rule for every child, whatever they were watching. A video call with grandma, an interactive reading app and passive scrolling can all be 60 minutes, but they are not equal.
  3. Toddlers: the one number that still holds Recommended hours/day Under

    18 months Avoid screens, except video calls with family 18 months – 2 years High-quality media only, watched together Ages 2 to 5 About 1 hour of high-quality, co-viewed content 2 1 1 0 0 <18 mo 2–5 yrs
  4. School-age kids: no magic number Ask instead Is this screen

time pushing out sleep, activity, homework or friends, or does it sit comfortably alongside them? Watch patterns, not the clock: an irritable, tired child after evening gaming says more than any hour-count. (Chart is illustrative: four things worth protecting.) Sleep Movement Homework Friendships
  5. The AAP's 5 Cs framework Child Age, temperament and sensitivities

matter, not a generic average Content Quality matters more than quantity Calm Media should not be the only tool for boredom or sleep Crowding Out The real question: "instead of what?" Communication Ongoing, judgment-free talk beats any app-blocker
  6. Steer toward screens that do double duty SEL content Movement-based

Naming feelings, resolving conflict, practising empathy: lessons parents can reuse later ("remember how they took a breath?"). Dance-alongs and follow-the-leader routines get kids out of the chair. Ten active minutes beat ten passive ones.
  7. Everyday habits that stick 1 Bedrooms device-free overnight 2 Screen-free

mealtimes 3 Co-view with younger kids 4 Unstructured screen-free time 5 Revisit the plan as they grow None of this needs a stopwatch. It needs noticing.
  8. The bottom line Under 18 mo Ages 2–5 School-age +
