Creative Data Science - Peter van der Putten

Creative Data Science - Peter van der Putten

Data science is not just an interesting field of research, but also a tool for students (and anyone interested in research) to become an autonomous researcher. Just like an autonomous artist, an autonomous researcher works from personal inspiration, is not afraid to tinker and research-by-doing and is open to asking unusual questions and follow unusual research approaches. In this talk Peter van der Putten will present a number of inspirational examples by student researchers from the Media Technology program at Leiden University, ranging from a machine that has learned to generate abstract paintings, a system to detect moral reasoning to a robot aiming to connect people in public space.

Actual scientific research science, papers, research, publications, conferences Personal inspiration & creativity media, arts, festivals, conceptual, playful, inspiring Research by doing technology, installations, creating things, open projects, unusual questions / methods / forms of output Mixing Science, Art, Technology The Media Technology MSc programme is a place where students are encouraged to translate personal inspirations and curiosities into their own research projects. To answer these questions, students create actual works, because we are convinced that by doing and creating, new scientific insights into the underlying question are encountered. To achieve this, the curriculum focuses on creative exploration and on the understanding of science and technology. One might say that Media Technology delivers autonomous creative researchers, just as art academies deliver autonomous artists. The programme prepares students for any future career involving creative and critical thinking, and in particular prepares them for a future in scientific research.
